Ss2 Technical Drawing Lesson Plan Week 2

This lesson plan is for a technical drawing class of 15-year-olds. The previous lesson covered ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas. This lesson will cover cycloids, trochoids, epicycloids, and hypocycloids - their meanings, real-life applications, and constructions. Examples will be provided to teach the students how to construct these special curves. Evaluation questions and an assignment will assess the students' understanding. The goal is for students to understand how these curves are applied in engineering and their importance.

Trochoids, Epicycloid and Hypocycloid, the real life application of these special curves and the
construction of these special curves.

ASSUMPTION: The leaners may have seen or heard about Special curves, the application and
construction of these special curves from their textbooks or online

ANTICIPATED PROBLEM: The learner may find it difficult to understand the meaning of
Cycloid, Trochoids, Epicycloid and Hypocycloid, the real life application of these special
curves and the construction of these special curves.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: The teacher will have to explain extensively about the meaning of
Cycloid, Trochoids, Epicycloid and Hypocycloid, the real life application of these special
curves and their construction.

TEACHING MATERIAL: Models, Posters, Drawing materials and equipment etc.

LEAD IN: Cycloidal group of curves is gotten when the rolling curve is a circle and the curve
on which it rolls is a straight line or a circle. Some of these cycloidal curves are cycloid,
trochoids, epicycloid and hypocycloid.

PROCEDURE

STEP 1: MEANING OF CYCLOID, TROCHOID, EPICYCLOID AND

HYPOCYCLOID
 Cycloid: is the curve traced by a point on the rim of a circular wheel (generating circle) as
the wheel rolls along a straight line (directing or base line) without slipping.
 Trochoid: This is a curve generated by a point outside or inside the circle rolling along a
straight line.
Types of Trochoid
There are mainly two types of trochoid, they are
1. Superior trochoid
2. Inferior trochoid

1. Superior trochoid: This is a curve generated when the point is outside the generating curve
2. Inferior trochoid: This is a curve generated when the point is inside the ge nerating curve

 Epicycloid: is a locus of a point (P) on the circumference of a circle (generating circle)

which rolls along another outside it.
 Hypocycloid: is a locus of a point (P) on the circumference of a circle (generating circle)
which rolls along another inside it.

STEP 2: REAL LIFE APPLICATION OF CYCLOID, TROCHOID, EPICYCLOID AND

HYPOCYCLOID
Real life application of Cycloid
MOTTO: MMFIDELIS IN MINIMIS MOTTO: FIDELIS IN MINIMIS
1. It is used in the conveyor of mould boxes in the foundry shops.
2. Cycloid is used by engineers and designers for designing roller coasters.
3. Cycloidal curves are mainly used in Kinematics.
4. It is used in Violin arching

Real life application of Trochoid

1. It is applied in rotary pumps
Real life application of Epicycloid
1. Epicycloid is widely used in mechanics for power transmission.
2. Cycloid curves are used in the design of gear tooth profiles.
3. Cycloid is used by engineers and designers for designing roller coasters.

Real life application of Hypocycloid

1. Cycloid curves are used in the design of gear tooth profiles.
2. Cycloid is used by engineers and designers for designing roller coasters.

STEP 3: CONSTRUCTION OF CYCLOID, TROCHOID, EPICYCLOID, AND

HYPOCYCLOID
Example 1: A circle of diameter 50 mm rolls on a straight line without slipping. Trace the locus
of a point on the circumference of the circler rolling for one complete revolution. Name the
curve, draw the tangent and normal at any point on the curve.
Solution

Example 2: Draw locus of a point, 5mm away from the periphery of a circle which rolls on a
straight line path. Take circle diameter as 50mm – Superior trochoid.
Solution

Example 3: Draw locus of a point, 5mm inside the periphery of a circle which rolls on a
straight line path. Take circle diameter as 50mm – Inferior trochoid.
Solution

Example 4: Draw epicycloid of a circle of 40 mm diameter, which rolls outside on another

circle of 150 mm diameter for one revolution clockwise. Draw a tangent and normal to it at a
point 95 mm from the center of the directing circle.
Solution

Example 5: Draw hypocycloid of a circle of 50 mm diameter, which rolls inside of another
circle of 180 mm diameter for one revolution counter clockwise. Draw a tangent and normal to
it at a point 65 mm from the center of the directing circle.

INTERACTION PATTERN: The use of explanatory, discussion, play-way, sketching,
teacher to learner and learner to learner method in her teaching method

STUDENTS’ EVALUATION:
1. What do you think about the following?
a) Cycloid
b) Trochoid
c) Epicycloid
2. Write out two ways each, which hypocycloid and epicycloid can be applied in real life
3. Draw locus of a point, 10mm away from the periphery of a circle which rolls on a straight
line path. Take circle diameter as 60mm – Superior trochoid.
4. Draw locus of a point, 10mm inside the periphery of a circle which rolls on a straight line
path. Take circle diameter as 70mm – Inferior trochoid.

TEACHER’S EVALUATION: The learners fully understood the meaning of Cycloids,

Trochoids, Epicycloids and Hypocycloids, its real life application and the construction of these
special curves.

ASSIGNMENT:
1. What do you think about the following?
a) Cycloid
b) Trochoid
MOTTO: MMFIDELIS IN MINIMIS MOTTO: FIDELIS IN MINIMIS
c) Epicycloid
2. Write out two ways each, which hypocycloid and epicycloid can be applied in real life
3. Draw epicycloid of a circle of 50 mm diameter, which rolls outside on another circle of 130
mm diameter for one revolution clockwise. Draw a tangent and normal to it at a point 85 mm
from the center of the directing circle.
4. Draw hypocycloid of a circle of 60 mm diameter, which rolls inside of another circle of 170
mm diameter for one revolution counter clockwise. Draw a tangent and normal to it at a
point 75 mm from the center of the directing circle.

CONCLUSION: Roulettes are formed when a circle rolls on a straight line but when it rolls on
both a directing line and directing circle then it is called cycloidal curves. Now cycloidal curves
have different types, they range from cycloids to tro choids to hypocycloid. All of these
cycloidal curves have a part to play in kinematics, mechanics and gear tooth profiles

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE: MORAL ORDER: God’s moral order is designed for the good of
humans and all of society. [Matt. 19:17]
BIBLICAL INTEGRATED LESSON: By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to
understand that just as God has designed the moral order for the good of humans and society so
God has also designed special curves to benefit humanity and society by having it aid in the
design of structures and so on.
