OBLIQUE DRAWING
PERFORMANCE
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this class, You should be able to:

 Describe oblique drawings.

 Draw simple oblique objects.

DEFINITION
Oblique drawing is also a pictorial method of drawing.
In oblique projection, the object is drawn with one of its faces
true to dimensions i.e. a face is parallel to the horizontal
plane. The receding lines (oblique lines) may be drawn at
angles 30°, 45°, or 60°, but 45° angle is mostly used.

Width – horizontal direction/line

Depth – receding line/diagonal axis

Height - vertical direction/line

TYPES OF OBLIQUE DRAWING
(1) Cavalier Projection:

In cavalier drawing all lines including receding lines and the three-axis lines
are made to their true length which means that if an object is shown is 4 cm
deep then while drawing that object with a cavalier method we have to draw
the object 4 cm deep.
In other words, it is an oblique drawing where the receding side is scaled in
actual size.
This type of drawing resembles very closely the actual image.

.
THE DIAGRAM BELOW SHOWS A CAVALIER PROJECTION OF A
SIMPLE BLOCK
(2) Cabinet Projection:
In this method, the horizontal line is drawn full size while the 45 0/300/600 slant
(receding line) is drawn half size or two-third of the actual dimension.

The diagram below shows a cabinet projection of a simple block

EXAMPLES OF OBLIQUE
DRAWING
STEPS INVOLVED IN OBLIQUE PROJECTION
190mm
Drawing a simple block in oblique projection

After setting your paper on your board and

drawing border lines(10mm) from the edge of
the paper and title block, follow the steps
below:
Stage 1.

Using the 450 set-square, tee-square, and drawing board, draw the oblique axes
To draw the oblique axes, the following steps are
to be taken.

• With your ruler firmly in place guided by your

tee square, Draw a straight horizontal line on
the lower section of your drawing paper and
+

mark a small cross (+) at any suitable location

on the horizontal line you have drawn as shown TITLE

below
 Using the 450-900 set-square, supported by the Tee-square, draw the
first vertical axis from the intersection of the +.
 Turn the set square to the 450 slant with the edge intersecting at the +
either to the right or left and draw the receding axis.
STAGE 2:
NEXT, LOCATE ALL GIVEN POINTS ON ANY GIVEN BLOCK ACCORDING TO THE
DIMENSIONS GIVEN. E.G. LENGTH, BREADTH AND HEIGHT.
TO DO THIS:
(I) PLACE YOUR RULER ON THE RECEDING LINE ,MEASURE AND MARK

8CM/80MM ON THE RECEDING LINE AS SHOWN BELOW

(i) Place your ruler on the horizontal line ,measure and mark 15cm/150mm
on the horizontal line as shown below
(iii) With your 450 setsquare place steadily on your tee-square such that it
aligns with the points you have marked, draw a vertical line, right through
the points you marked in the previous step as shown below
(iv) Using your ruler measure and mark 14cm/140mm on all the three
vertical lines as shown below
(v) Using your ruler draw a line to link the vertical lines as shown below
(vi) In order to complete the top region of the block, move your tee-square upward
and place your 450 setsquare on the tee square such that you are able to draw a 450
line through the left intersecting section of the block as shown below
(vii)Place your ruler on the 450 line you have just drawn, measure and mark
8cm/80mm
Stage 3:

Finally, you complete your drawing by outlining your work

Don’t forget to dimension your work
NOTE:

Unless you are given specific instructions, all oblique drawings should be
carried out at an angle of 450 and dimensions on the receding sides
reduced by half.
EVALUATION
1. Explain different ways of processing metals.

2. State at least two advantages and disadvantages of the different 3

casting methods.

3. Name at least three metal alloys.

4. State three uses of common metal alloys.
