Summary
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I was eight years old when my grandfather first took me to see the inside of a WDP4
diesel-electric locomotive of Indian railways. That's when my fascination for machines
began, and since then, my love for automobiles, locomotives, and aircraft has constantly
been getting stronger. To connect my passion with education, I chose to do my Bachelor's
in Mechanical Engineering at the Ramaiah Institute of Technology.
The subjects that got me thinking and gave me a rush were Automotive Electronics,
Electrical Vehicle Technology, and Thermodynamics. I was interested in learning more
about these subjects than my academics. Hence, I chose to do my internship in the
Automobile industry. I joined Toyota Industries Engine India Pvt Ltd for my internship,
where I learned about the world-famous "Global-Diesel Engine" and "Toyota New
Generation Architecture Engine." I got to know about advanced technologies used in
manufacturing engine components, accurate machining of parts, the iron casting process
required for manufacturing the Crankshaft and Engine head block, and Electrolytic
hardening of the crankshaft, which is one of the rarest mechanisms that we can see
around here, also learned about how and why the piston design of a diesel engine is
different in Toyota than the other cars. Apart from the manufacturing aspects of the
company, I got to dive deep into understanding the complicated concepts of
turbocharging the engine and integrating the system with another new-gen idea of an
Exhaust gas recirculating system. During my internship, I spent a lot of time
understanding how the Hybrid engine works and the use of all components they put
together in their TNGA engine, the massive attention to detail to increase
manufacturability, and the safety of the people working inside the factory and also made
a prototype stand to dispense cleaning fluid by mechanical actuation in the assembly line.

In my first year of engineering, I joined as a suspension design engineer for a Formula
Student team called Velocita Racing in my college, where I consecutively participated in a
Formula Bharat competition over three seasons. I have taken up responsibilities as a
Suspension design engineer. Vehicle dynamics lead, and finally Role of Vice Captain of the
team. I have been directly involved in setting up the car's suspension geometry and
designing the car. I have developed the wheel assembly of the car, and by calculating the
loads acting on the vehicle, I have run fatigue analysis using FEA and optimized the
upright design, keeping in mind the factor of safety and removing unnecessary materials
in the design. I have had five juniors under me to whom I have transferred my knowledge
from my experience on the team and working on getting a consistent performance-
oriented vehicle. Also, I have worked on getting the cost report and a business plan.
Application of the engineering procedures, manufacturing of gears, shafts and driving
conclusions of flanges, heat treatment, and developing industry-level skills by interacting
with our team's sponsors and being in touch with people in the industry during the design
and development phase has paved the way for me to set a goal of where I want my career
to be.
I want to talk about my project, "Design of a chuck for Lathe Machine." I was the leader of
a team of four where we designed a prototype chuck for a lathe machine that could hold
a Coconut shell, allowing us to do work as facing and parting on the coconut shell. Coconut
flesh is an essential ingredient in Indian cuisine. After obtaining the flesh from the shell,
the shell is regarded as waste and thrown away. My team and I wanted to eliminate this
as we could reuse the coconut shells to make cups for drinking a beverage, utensils used
in cooking, and equipment used in gardening. We designed the prototype considering
centrifugal forces, reaction forces between the surface of the chuck and shell, and
minimum rpm for slipping of shell from the chuck, and finally used FEM to confirm the
design. After that, we 3D printed the prototype for testing and submitted a report.

My four years of under graduation have provided me with solid fundamentals,
encouraged me to learn more, and goaded me to continue my passion for working in the
2
automobile industry. My immediate career objective is to complete my Master's degree in
Mechanical engineering and develop Industrial standard skills with a team or a company
that is closely associated with the industry itself and, in the later stage, become an
entrepreneur in this sector.

After going through your college website, I found out that by taking graduate studies at
1
your EPFL university, I could venture out into various subject domains and develop a
strong sense of Independence coupled with responsibility and self-reliance. It would also
help me learn about Global standards in this field and become aware of the worldwide
competition, which is very helpful for making an impactful contribution to the area of
Mechanical Engineering.
