Social Media: Benefits and Drawbacks

The document discusses both the benefits and drawbacks of social media. It notes that as of 2021 over 4.26 billion people used social media worldwide. While social media allows people to strengthen relationships and feel connected, it can also be a place for cyberbullying and a platform for predators to target others, especially children. An experiment found that within an hour of creating a fake underage profile, it was contacted by 7 adult men, and by 9 days that number had risen to 92 contacts. The document concludes that with proper precautions, social media can be safe, but also poses dangers like cyberbullying, privacy invasion, and identity theft that require awareness.

Social Media is a place where you can create new friends, reconcile with old

friends, or where you can your find true love. There are no limits in social media, you

can create a very safe place for you and your new circle of friends, and you can be

connected to people from the opposite side of the earth, there is nothing really stopping

you. As of 2021, over 4.26 billion people were using social media worldwide.

Social Media can help you strengthen your relationship with the people around

you. One study found that 93% of adults use Facebook to connect with family while

91% with friends. Everyone knows that social media allows us to connect to people 24/7

as long as they are active. According to one study, 81% of teens ages 13-17 say that

social media makes them feel more connected to the people in their life, while 68% say

using it makes them feel supported during tough times. Social Media is not only a place

where you stay connected to people, people who uses social media can also help you

during dark times. It is a place where you can receive support on certain things, you can

also freely express yourself on social media about yourself or about a certain matter. In

social media, you meet a lot of new people and be connected with them. I have

personally experienced this, I have met and connected with a lot of people through

social media, and I still am currently connected with a lot of them. We have created a

special bond through social media.

Social Media can also be a platform for businesses. Social Media has a lot of

platforms where you can promote your business, such as; Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram,

and even on Twitter. In the midst of pandemic, social media was a very effective way of

promoting your business. Even now that the pandemic has passed, many entrepreneurs

still promote their business online. It’s free and very effective.

With over 4.26 billion users in social media, is it still safe for everyone? Social

Media also has its drawbacks. Social media can also be a place for cyberbullying,

especially if you reach the wrong target or audience. In good there is bad and the bad

there is good. In social media, there are both good and bad people. I have witnessed a

lot of cyberbullying on Tiktok, Facebook, and Twitter. Even though social media can be

a safe place for everyone, if you end up on the wrong side of social media, you will

experience potential danger. Cyberbullying, invasion of privacy, Identity Theft, and

Predators are some of the dangers in social media.

A lot of dangers are currently lurking in social media, which is why children are

not safe in social media. You have to be at least 13 years old to sign up on social

media. It is recommended to parents to supervise your children social media accounts.

Because without parental supervision, children may be exposed to explicit things on

social media, or can be targeted by predators or hackers.

In today’s generation, almost all teens have social media accounts, whether it be

on Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, or Instagram. An experiment conducted by the channel

“Bark” on youtube, where they created a fake profile of a 15-year-old girl named “Libby”

on Instagram to test how long will it take for predators to approach her. In the first hour

of launching the account, seven adult men contacted her. By the end of nine days, that

number was 92. This shows that predators are lurking around waiting for a target, and

when they see one, they will waste no time. This experiment shows that if you let your

child use social media, a lot of predators will surround her.

Predators aren’t the only ones lurking in social media, we also have hackers.

Posting personal details about you is not advisable in social media, as there are a lot of

people who will surely use it to their advantage. Such as; pretending to be you, stalking,

and hacking. Hackers uses links to hack into your account, many of these links will be

sent to you through dms. I have experienced a lot of these scams, and it is advisable to

not click the links. Because once a hacker gets a hold of your account, they can do a lot

of damage. Such as; finding out where you live, getting access to some of your

accounts, and gathering personal information about you.

In conclusion, despite having a lot of benefits, social media also has a lot of

drawbacks. But with the right tools and environment, social media can be a safe place

for you. If you choose your friends wisely, and be very careful on social media, you can

have a lot of fun.
