1. What happened? (Describe the situation or event, including who was involved and the
associated events. Avoid making judgments; simply describe.)
What happened today was all about the discussion of some topics related to nursing,
and these topics were the concept of nursing and nursing as an art. This discussion happened
via Google Meet, and the professor and students were there.
The first topic that was discussed was the concept of nursing. In the discussion a while
ago, she talked about what the vision of nursing was, and few of us answered correctly. She
discussed the definition of nursing given by the International Council of Nurses. She talked
about the definition of a nurse, and she compared it to where we, the students, are now in
time. She also discussed the definition of profession, professionalism, and the six
characteristics of a professional. Another topic that was discussed was all about the roles of
the nurse; she added that a nurse has many roles that are varied and complex. She talked
about how caring for patients requires the nurses to take on different roles at different times
to meet all the needs and care needed by every patient. In this way, patients can see that the
nurse is effective. The professor gave some situations related to the said topic to make us
imagine and relate how a nurse should do his work.
The second topic was nursing as an art. In this topic, one of the integral aspects of
nursing, which is caring, was discussed. In this topic, the meaning of caring was discussed
and the nursing theories on caring were identified. The importance of different types of
knowledge in nursing was included too. How the nurses demonstrated caring in practice and
the evaluation of the importance of self-care for the professional nurse were able to be
discussed. At the end of the discussion, the professor also talked about the value of reflective
practice in nursing and how it should be applied in everyday life. After the lecture, she gave
us an activity entitled a self-reflective journal on the topic that had been discussed.
2. What did you do and think? (Describe your role in the situation, what you did, and your
thoughts at the time. Again, focus on description only.)
I am one of the students that was present in the discussion, and all I did was listen and
try to understand what the professor was discussing, even though she was fast-paced. But I
can still follow what she is discussing, and I comprehend it. Because of what she told us about
her experiences, it made me think that being a nurse is such a big responsibility. It was not
an easy job because there are many things to remember and consider when it comes to
nursing. It made me realize that this is my chosen field and I need to have a better focus on
it. Nursing is connected to anything and everywhere, like the family, community, other
countries, and even myself. It made me aware of the fact that I should be more open with
others, more disciplined, trust myself, take initiative, and have the willingness to learn more
and study hard.
3. What did it mean? (Analyze the meaning of the event to those involved. How did the
environment or context of the event influence the participants? Bring in ideas from outside of
the experience to enlighten and compare.)
While my professor was discussing all about the concepts of nursing and nursing as an
art, I think it helped me enlighten my other knowledge about nursing. She also discussed other
topics that were vague and hard to understand for me at first. Before, some topics were
already discussed in the pre-requisite subject, but it left me to question whether my own
understanding of that topic was correct and related to it. But in the end, what she discussed
and explained was right from what I understood.
4. How do you evaluate the situation? (What was good or bad about the experience, in light of
your own values and feelings?)
For me, it was a good experience, considering my own values and feelings. Because
in nursing, there should be an evaluation of the situation and its weight, whether it could be
helpful or harmful. Nursing is full of legal and ethical issues that still happen these days. It
should also be beneficial, not just for myself but for the clients that I am going to handle in the
clinical rotation someday.
5. What did you learn? (What conclusions did you reach about the situation, in a general sense?
More specifically, what did you learn about yourself and your own way of working?)
In a general sense, the conclusion that I reached about the situation was to always
remember all the basic procedures in nursing because this is the foundation of all nursing
procedures. All things started in the easiest way up to the hardest one, which is why it is
important to remember.
6. Now what? (What are you going to do differently (or the same) based on what you learned
from this experience? Where can you get more information to improve your understanding
and approach to practice?)
I have learned many things and concepts about nursing. It is up to me how I am going
to do it based on the discussion from a while ago. If there is some difficulty that I will
experience, I’m going to ask for guidance from my clinical instruction and ask some questions
regarding what I experience. I don’t want to harm anyone in my care. I should keep in mind
that I should remember all the teachings and possess the traits that a nurse should possess
to make my future clients trust me.
