Expose Yourself

Modals or modal auxiliaries are helping verbs used with a principal verb. They
indicate the mood of the verb. Mood refers to the form of a verb in telling that the speaker
regards what he or she is saying as either a fact, possibility or desire, or a command. Modals
are special. They are not like the regular verbs whose function is to indicate an action or a
condition. They are used together with the main verb. When placed before a verb, each
modal can provide a different meaning to it. They have different functions such as expressing
ability, permission, obligation, possibility, necessity, and suggestion. In this module, you will
study the different modals such as can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and
would. In order to use modals correctly, it is very important to understand their meaning and
function.

Modals may be single words or phrases as in:

Using Modals for Making Requests

Modals may be used for making two kinds of requests:

- Request of general nature


1. Will you help me with this experiment?
2. Would you help me with this experiment?
3. Can you buy the tickets for me?
4. Could you buy the tickets for me?

- Specific requests for permission


1. May I leave the room now?
2. Can I borrow your dictionary?
3. Could I turn on the fan?

In responding to request, these may be used:

Using Modals for Giving Advice

Read the sentences. Find out how the modals are used.
1. You must say thank you often.
2. You should/ought to say thank you often.
3. You might/could say thank you often.

Note: Modals are used in giving advice. Which of the sentences expresses the highest
degree of authority or urgency? Sentence 1 does. Sentence 2 conveys higher degree than
Sentence 3.
