CEN108 Tutorial 01

This tutorial document covers fluid mechanics concepts and problems. It includes: 1) Three practice problems involving gas compression, mass of air in a container, and changes in ideal gas temperature and volume. 2) A problem calculating shear stress in a pipe given a velocity profile equation. 3) Two problems involving sliding blocks - one down an incline in oil and another involving a piston in a lubricated pipe. 4) A problem determining true water height in a glass tube manometer. 5) A problem involving determining pressures at various points in systems shown in diagrams. 6) A problem involving calculating elevations in open piezometer columns and a U-tube gauge deflection

CIVIL ENGINEERING – IIT ROORKEE

TUTORIAL # 1

CE 108 - FLUID MECHANICS Spring Semester

1. (A) A cylinder contains 0.35 m3 of air at 50°C and 300 kPa. The air is then compressed to 0.07 m3.
Assuming isothermal conditions, what are the pressure at the new volume and the bulk modulus of
elasticity?

(B) Air is kept at a pressure of 200 kPa and a temperature of 30°C in a 500-L container. What is
the mass of the air?

(C) An ideal gas has its pressure doubled and its specific volume decreased by two-thirds. If the
initial temperature is 27°C, what is the final temperature?

2. Water is moving through a pipe. The velocity profile at some section is given mathematically as v
= (β/4μ)(D2/4 - r2), where v = velocity of water at any position r, β = a constant, μ = viscosity of
water, D = pipe diameter, and r = radial distance from centerline. What is the shear stress at the
wall of the pipe due to the water? What is the shear stress at a position r = D/4?

3. (A) A square block weighing 1.1 kN and 250 mm on an edge slides down an incline on a film of
oil 6.0 μm thick, as shown in Figure (i). Assuming a linear velocity profile in the oil, what is the
terminal speed of the block? The dynamic viscosity of the oil is 0.007 Pa·s.

(B) A piston of weight 10kg slides in a lubricated pipe, as shown in Figure (ii). The Clearance
between piston and pipe is 0.025 mm. If the piston decelerates at 0.65 m/s2 when the speed is 6.5
m/s, what is the viscosity of the oil?

4. The glass tube in Figure (iii) is used to measure pressure p1 in the water tank. The tube diameter
is 1 mm and the water is at 30 °C. After correcting for surface tension, what is the true water height
in the tube?

5. Determine the pressures at points A, B, C & D for cases shown in Figure (iv) & (v)

6. For a gauge reading at A of -2.50 psi, determine the (a) elevations of the liquids in the open
piezometer columns E, F, and G and (b) deflection of the mercury in the U-Tube gauge in Figure
(vi). Neglect the weight of air. [Hint : 1 psi = 6894.757293178 N/m2 ≈ 6.895 kN/m2]

7. Develop a formula for capillary rise between two concentric glass tubes of radii ro & ri and contact
angle θ. See Figure (vii).

8. A disk of radius r0 rotates at angular velocity ω inside an oil bath of viscosity μ, as shown in Figure
(viii). Assuming a linear velocity profile and neglecting shear on the outer disk edges, derive an
expression for the viscous torque on the disk.
