Developing The Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework shows the researcher's perspective on the problem and relationships between constructs under investigation. It can take visual forms like diagrams. A conceptual framework explains the main factors and variables being studied and their assumed relationships. The purpose is to support the basic concepts of the study. The conceptual framework is the backbone, using relevant literature to provide context for measuring and answering questions related to the study's variables and problems. It should explain the meaning of variables and how sub-problems can be measured or answered.

DEVELOPING THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK is the researcher ‘s own position on the problem and gives
direction to the study. The researcher can show the relationships of the different constructs that he
wants to investigate. It maybe a flowchart, tree diagram, shaped-based diagram, triangles, concentric
circles, overlapping circles, mind maps and software systems

(Robson, 2016) defined conceptual framework as a visual or written product, one that
“explains, either graphically or in narrative form, the main things to be studied, the key factors,
concepts or variables and the presumed relationships among them”. The most important thing to
understand about your conceptual framework is that it is primarily a conception or model of what is
out there that you plan to study, and of what is going on with these things and why use it as a
tentative theory of the phenomena that you are investigating. A theory is based upon a hypothesis
and backed by evidence. It presents idea that is testable and is a fact-based framework for describing
a phenomenon. A concept on the other hand is a particular belief, meaning and a well- defined idea
which is more observable in various practical situations. Hence, concepts are the bases on the
usefulness of theories and these usually are in a form of principles, characteristics, guidelines,
measures, patterns and/or output of a particular inquiry or research. Yet, either the idea is from a
theory or specific concept, it can still be considered and discussed in the Conceptual Framework.

The basic purpose of a framework is to support the basic concept of the study. From the sets
of collected literature, the researchers must choose which among the related concepts and ideas
is/are the most supportive and relevant to the research. Relevance means the focus and the variables
involved in the present research are directly similar and supported by the literature to be used as a
framework. In a more literal meaning, the conceptual framework is the backbone (strength) of the
research. The framework to be used is of high importance to the research when the concept explored
gives clear explanations on the variables being measured in the study. In some cases, concepts
discussed in the framework provide information on how the problems of the study can be measured
or answered.

In your research, it is clear that the meaning of the variables or ideas included in your title
should be explained and how the sub- problems can be answered/measured

The parts under the Conceptual Framework are:

First and Second Paragraphs- ideas/concepts about your research variables

Related Literature and Studies (Thematically arranged or arranged by topic)

Research Paradigm
