2. Answer ALL questions in section A and B and only one question from section C
3. Show your work clearly
4. Non programmable calculators may be used in the examination room
5. All writing must be in blue or black ink EXCEPT for diagrams which should be in pencil
6. Where necessary the following constants may be used
 Acceleration due to gravity g = 10m/s2
 Density of water = 1g/cm3 or 1000Kg/m3
 Pi, ∏ =3.14
 Refractive index of water = 4/3
SECTION A (16 MARKS)

3. (a) State three ways in which the image formed in a plane mirror differs from the image
formed in a pin hole camera(4.5marks)

(b) A block and tackle system consisting of 5 pulleys is used to raise the load of 400N through
a distance of 10 m. If the work done against friction is 1000J, calculate it's efficiency (4.5
marks)

4. (a) Why is it easier to open a cap of the bottle with a bottle opener than with your fingers (3
marks)

(b) Briefly explain why It is difficult to stop bleeding from a cut in the body at high altitude. (3
marks)

(c) A ball of mass 0.5 kg is thrown vertically upward with a velocity of 8m/s. Calculate the
maximum potential energy it gains at the highest position ( 3 marks)

5. (a) Explain why the image of an object formed by a convex mirror is called a virtual image?(
3 marks)
(b) A ray of light travelling from air to water is incident at the surface of water at an angle
of 30°. Calculate the angle of refraction in the water (3 marks)

(c) 4. A converging mirror forms an upright image that is four times the size of the object.
Given that the focal length of the lens is 20 cm, determine the object distance. (3 marks)

6. (a) Using the domain theory of magnetism, explain how heating a magnet weakens the
magnet. (4marks)

(b) Find the resultant force, F, when two forces, 9 N and 15 N, act on an object with an angle
of 60° between them, by using parallelogram law ( 5 marks)

7.(a) With the aid of ray diagrams distinguish between the angle of reflection and the angle of
refraction (4.5 marks)

(b) An object 30 cm high is placed 20 cm away from a convex mirror of focal length 25 cm.
Describe the position,size and nature of the image formed ( 4.5 marks)

8. (a) Two students are riding their bikes on the same concrete road. One student's bike had new
tyres whereas the other had used tyres.Which of them is most likely to skid while moving
through a road which has lubricating oil spilled over it? Explain your answer.(2.5 marks)

(b) A horizontal force of 15 N is applied to a 5 kg box placed on a horizontal table. Will the
box move if the coefficient of friction is 0.4? ( 2.5 marks)

(c) A rectangular box of mass 10 kg rests on an incline. Let the coefficient of static friction be
0.55 and that of kinetic friction be 0.25

(i) At what angle will the box begin to slide? ( 1.5 marks)

(ii) If the incline is kept at that angle after the box begins to slide, what will be the box’s
acceleration? ( 2.5 marks)

SECTION C (30 MARKS)

Answer any two (2) questions from this section.


9 (a) It is required to obtain the equivalent resistance of 4Ω, there are two resistors; the first is
12Ω, what will be the value of the other resistor? State the way it will be connected to the first
Ω, what will be the value of the other resistor? State the way it will be connected to the first ( 5
marks)

(b) Explain four factors that affect the resistance of aconductor. (4mark)

(c) In the circuit shown in the fig below, the battery has a voltage of 3 V. Calculate the total
current when switch K is
(i) open ( 3 marks)

(ii) closed ( 3 marks)

10. (a) And object 5 cm tall is placed 15 cm in front of a concave mirror of focal length 10
cm.By means of accurate graphical construction, determine the position and nature of the image
formed.(5marks)

(b) An object 3 cm high is placed 30 cm away from a convex mirror of focal length 12 cm.
using the mirror formula, find the position, the height and the nature of the image formed.( 5
marks)

(c) With the aid of a suitable diagram explain why a pencil dipped obliquely into water
appears to be bent at the point where it enters the water(5 marks)

11. (a) If the speed of light in liquid and in air is 2.8 x 10⁸ m/s and 3.0 x10⁸ m/s, respectively.A
ray of light travelling from air to liquid is incident at the surface of water at an angle of 30°.
Calculate the angle of refraction in the liquid.( 6marks)

(b) Briefly explain why is it easy to slip when there is soap water on the floor?( 4 marks)

(c)Explain any five importance of friction in daily life. (5 marks)
