PHYSICS FORM THREE
TIME: 3:00 Hours. March, 2025

INSTRUCTIONS

1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer all questions in section A and B and two (2) questions from section C.
3. Section A carries fifteen (15 marks), section B sixty (60 marks), and section C carries
twenty five (25 marks).
4. Non –programmable calculators and mathematical tables may be used.
5. Where necessary, the following constants may be used:-
(i) Acceleration due to gravity, g=10m/s2
(ii) Density of water = 1gm/cm3 or 1000kg/m3
SECTION A (15 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section.
1. For each of the items (i) – (x), choose the correct answer from among the given
alternatives and write its letter beside the item number in the answer sheet (s) provided:-
(i) The instrument that is used to measure length to an accuracy of 0.01cm is:-

(i) Triangle law of vector addition(1.5 marks)
(ii) Parallelogram law of vector addition (1.5 mark)
(c) A man walk from South a distance of 20m due to North and then 15m due to East.
Calculate the resultant vector (3 marks)
4. (a) (i) Define the term Resistance and state its SI unit.(1 mark)
(ii) Explain two types of Resistor.(2 marks)
(b) Briefly, explain three factors that affect the Resistance of a conductor .(3 marks)
(c) Consider the figure below then calculate Pd across 4 ohm and 6 ohm.(4 marks)

5. (a) Give the meaning of:


(i) Moment of force (1 mark)
(ii) Centre of gravity(1 mark)
(iii) Centre of mass(1 mark)
(b) (i) Give two condition for a body to be in equilibrium.(1 mark)
(ii) Give two characteristics of couple.(1 mark)
(c) (i) State the principle of conservation of linear momentum (1 mark).
(ii) A weight of 10N is suspended by a string from a fixed point. A second string is
attached to the weight and is used to apply a horizontal force. The first string makes
an angle of 300 with the vertical force. Determine the horizontal force pulling the
weight and the tension in the first string. (4 marks)
6. (a) Explain any three (3) laws governing friction. (3 marks)
(b) (i) Distinguish between dynamic and static friction. (2 marks)
(ii) A loaded trailer weighing 10kg is being towed across a level ground of coefficient
of dynamic friction 0.25. Determine the force on the trailer. (2 marks)
(c) A mass of 5kg is placed on a plane inclined at an angle of 300 to the horizontal. What
is the accelerating force required to pull the mass up the plane if the coefficient of
friction is 0.5? (3 marks)

7. (a) (i) Why friction is undesirable in machine parts, provide four reason. (2 marks)
(ii) Why car brakes are designed using hydraulic oil and not water. Give two reasons.
(2 marks)
(b) (i) Can the coefficient of friction be greater than 1? Explain (1 mark)
(ii) Explain why the coefficient of static friction is larger than the coefficient of
Kinetic friction? (1 mark)
(c) A horizontal force of 15N is applied to a 5kg box placed on a horizontal table. Will
the box move if the coefficient of friction is 0.4? (4 marks)
8. (a) (i) Explain why does a body float in a fluid ?(2 marks)
(ii) Give two conditions for a body to float (2 marks)
(b) Explain why iron needle sink in water where as a ship made of iron float on it?
(2 marks)
(c) A ballon and the gas in it has a mass of 450g and its volume is 500cm3. What is the
maximum load it can lift in air of density 1.3g/cm3.(4 marks)

SECTION C (25 Marks)


Answer two (2) questions from this section.
9. (a) (I) Imagine that friction suddenly vanishes. How would life be affected? List five such
situations (5 Marks)
(II) define the following terms;
(i) limiting friction (1 mark)
(ii) normal reaction (1 mark)
(iii) viscosity (1 mark)
(iv) coefficient of friction (1/2 mark)
(b) As the normal reaction force increases, what happens to the frictional force?(1-marks)
(c) A block of mass m slides down a plane inclined at an angle of 600 to the horizontal
with an acceleration equal to half of the acceleration due to gravity. Show that the
coefficient of kinetic friction k = √3 − 1 (3 marks)

10. (a) (i) Mention any four applications of hydrometer. (4 marks)


(ii) State Archimedes principle and law of floatation. (2 marks)
(b) Describe on the energy changes that take place when a simple pendulum savings from
one side to another side. (3 marks)
(c) The tip of a needle has a cross section area of 1x10-6m2. If a doctor applies a force of
20N to a syringe that is connected to the needle. Determine the pressure exerted at the
tip of the needle. (31/2 marks)

11. (a) (i) How do speed and velocity differ? (2 marks)


(ii) A car’s speed is 10m/s. What does it mean?(2 marks)
(b) State the Newton’s laws of rectilinear motion. (3 marks)
(c) A truck of mass 3000kg moving at 3m/s collides head on with a car of mass 600kg.
The two stop dead on collision. At what velocity was the car travelling? (51/2 marks)
