I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, the students can:
a. Define what is counterclaims;
b. Formulate counterclaims in response to claims made in a text read;
and
c. Appreciate the importance of steps in writing counterclaims.

B. Lesson Proper
After the review of the previous lesson, the teacher will ignite students’
interest through motivational activity.

1.ACTIVITY I (REACT TO THIS)

Instruction: React on the following pictures. Give me your own stand,


and ready to share to the class after 3 minutes.
ANALYSIS

1. Did you enjoy the activity?


2. How do you find it?
3. How did you form your stand on the picture?
4. Are the situations depicted reality in our society?
5. Based on the activity, do have any hint/clue about the lesson we are going
to discuss today?

C.ABSTRACTIONS
To give the students an explicit understanding about the topic, the teacher will
discuss the definition of counterclaims and the steps in writing counterclaims.

What is Counterclaims?
- are claims made to rebut a previous claim. They provide a
contrasting perspective to the main argument.
- answer the question ―What are other credible possibilities?

The following questions will help you formulate a counterclaim:


 What are the major points on which you and the author can
disagree?
 What is the strongest argument? What did they say to defend
their position?
 What are the merits of their view?
 What are the weaknesses or shortcomings in their argument?
 Are there any hidden assumptions?
 Which lines from the text best support the counterclaim you have
formulated?

Steps in Writing a Counterclaim


Step One – Ways to begin counterclaim paragraphs
 Many people believe that . . .
 It is often thought that . . .
 It might seem as if . . .
 While it is common . . .
Step Two – Ways to transition from the opposite side back to your
opinion
 What this argument fails to consider is . . .
 This view sounds convincing at first but . . .
 Although the core claim is valid, it suffers from the flaw in its . . .
Step Three – Write a counterclaim. Use one of the sentence starters in
step one.

D. APPLICATION
To measure students understanding of the topic, the students will react or
give their counterclaim on the claim which I will flash on the screen.

ACTIVITY 2 (THE COUNTERCLAIM I WANT TO HEAR)


Instruction: Read the given claim. Write your counterclaim based on
the given claim.

1. Claim: “Vaccination must be mandatory and a requirement in


travelling”

2. Bullying can be extremely damaging and destructive to mental
wellbeing.
3. Social media is the most powerful source of information.
