EAP focuses instruction on the skills required to perform in english-speaking academic context ‘Structure of Academic texts three-part essay structure ‘the reader is introduced to the topic that will be discussed and to the argument that will be presented v the arguments are summed up in conclusion Introduction + to provide the reader with a clear idea of the focus and aim of the text + the topic will be presented in this part + often accompanied by thesis statement + provides the background of the argument + introduces theoretical _ perspective, terminologies, etc. that will be used Body swhere the argument, ideas and results are developed and discussed Conclusion should not contains any new facts or ideas but rather functions as a brief restatement of ‘the main arguments and factsPREWRITING is the first stage of writing process. It can consist of a combination Of outlining, diagramming, storyboarding, clustering -Brainstorming is a group of creativity technique by which efforts are made to find @ conclusion for a specific problem by gathering a list of ideas spontaneously contributed by its members. -Free writing \s a prewriting technique in which a person writes continuously for a set, Period of time without regard to spelling, grammar or topic. Clustering allows you to explore many ideas as soon as they occur to you. To begin with a cluster, choose a word that Is central to your assignment. WRITING involves the students in organizing ideas into a coherent structure. The goal Of drafting is to translate ideas into written organization without being constrained by word choice, sentence structure, conventions and presentation. Thesis statement is the claim or stand that you will develop in your paper. It is the controlling idea of the essay. -Organizing your ideas means finding the connections of one point to another and establishing a link from one idea to another Outlining \s an effecting way of ensuring the logical flow of your ideas. Critique can be used carefully analyze a variety of works such as; + Creative works -novels, exhibits, films, images, poetry + Research- monographs, journals, articles,theories *Media- news report, feature articles. Critique uses formal academic writing style and has a clear structure that is introduction,body and conclusions. The body of the critique includes a summary of a work and a detailed evaluation. How to start a Critique Paper? Stop 1: Introduce the work you are critiquing. Give the name of the author, the title of the work, date of publication and a very brief summary. Just a few sentences of the arguments your author make. Step 2: After a brief opinion of your own entice to the reader, for example you may write * Brown's research study was flawed, however, making his conclusion irrelevant. Step 3: Back up your opinion with just few sentences ‘that give a general overview of your analysis Step 4: State your thesis, this maybe just one sentence or several, depending on the length and completely of your agument. The thesis statement Is your big point and should give the reader a taste of your overall conclusion,REACTION PAPER -also called response essay, it is a type of writing that has something to do with your opinions about the good ness or badness of the text, perhaps a book that is in question. A reaction paper is not just a paper where you express your opinion.These papers re quire a close reading of the text that goes be yond the surface meaning. You must respond to implied ideas and elaborate, evaluate, and analyze the author's purpose and main point. It requires you to formulate analysis and reaction to a given body of material such as readings, lectures or students presentations. ‘The purpose of a reaction paper is to focus your thinking on a topic after a close ‘examination of the source material.COVER PAPER -also known as letter of application, is a job application document sent with your resume. to provide additional information about your skills and experience. It Is intended to provide detailed information (on why you are a qualified candidate for the Job you are applying for. Effective application letters explains the reasons for your interest in the specific organization and identify your most relevant skills or experience Heading (for a business letter) sshould include your name, address, city, state, and zip code followed by your phone number and email. The date should be In the next line. Then you should first list the company contact, their title, company address and city, state, and zip code. ‘Subject (for an email letter) List the job you are applying for and your name in the subject line of your email mes sage, so that the employer is clear to what job are you interested in and who you are. Greeting Begin your letter with "Dr./Mr/Ms.Lastname”. If you do not know the employer's last name, simply write “Dear Hiring manager” then start with the first paragraph Body of the letter First paragraph Explain why you are writing. Middte paragraph State what you have to offer the employer = mention your skills and experiences are a god fit for the job. Last paragraph Say thank you to the Hiring manager for considering your note and you will follow up.CURRICULUM VITAE -Ie a Latin word for “course of life’. In contrast resume is French for ‘summary’ Here's some information that you should include to your CV. Identification ‘include your name, address, telephone number, and email address use a professional email address Objective “this section is optional. If you decide to in clude 4 CV profile which includes a summary of your skills, experiences and goals. Education ‘include the degrees you have received in chronological order ‘include the name of its institution, location, ‘and your date of graduation. swhen applicable, include your major/minor fields as well as your GPA, honors, and publications. Experience ‘include your work experience in chronological order ‘includes jobs, internship and volunteer work. igh school students might include clubs ‘and sports teams when applicable. ‘include the name of the company, the position and date of employmentINTERVIEW “is a conversation where questions are asked and answers are given. In commen parlance interview refers to one-on-one conversation with ene person acting as the interviewer and Other in the role of interviewee. Employment. Interviews in an employment context are typically called job interviews which describes a formal consultation for the purpose of evaluating the qualifications of the interviewee for a specific position. A specific type of job interview in case Interview in which the application us presented with a question or task and asked to resolve the situation. ‘Sometimes to prepare for job interviews, candidates are treated to. a mack interview. Mock interview as a training exercise to prepare the respondent to handle questions in the subsequent ‘real’ interview. Sometimes the interviews happen in several waves, with the first interview sometimes being called a screening interview which is a shorter length interview, followed by more indepth Interviews later on, usually by company. Practice good non-verbal communicationTHE STAR METHOD is a structured manner of responding to a behavioral -based interview question by discussing the specific situation, task, action, and result of the situation you are describing. Situation: Describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish. You must describe a specific event or situation, not a generalized description of what you have done in the past. Be sure to give enough detail for the interviewer to understand. ‘Task: What goal were you working toward? Action: Describe the actions you took to address the situation with an appropriate amount of detail and keep the focus on YOU.
