Lesson 2 Random Variables

This document defines key terms like variable, random variable, and discusses the classification of random variables as either discrete or continuous. A random variable is a variable whose possible values are determined by chance. Random variables can be classified as either discrete, which can only take countable values, or continuous, which can assume any value in an interval. Examples of each type are provided to illustrate the difference.

Lesson 2:

Random
Variable
Variable
➢ It is the characteristic or property of the element.

➢ It is any characteristics, number or quantity that

can be counted or measured.

➢ It is an attribute that describe a person, place,

thing or idea.
Random Variable
It is a variable being measured to
produce numerical observation
associated with random outcomes of
a chance experiment.
Random Variable
It is a variable whose possible values
are determined by chance.

It is a rule that assigns a number to each

outcome of a chance experiment.

Classification of Random Variable
1. Discrete Random Variable

✓ It is the one that can assume a countable

number of values.
✓ it can only take a finite (countable)
number of distinct values.
Classification of Random Variable
1. Discrete Random Variable
✓ Are random variable where the observed
numerical value are produced by counting
and whole numbers only.

✓ Discrete random variables are variables that

are a result of a random event.
Classification of Random Variable
2. Continuous Random Variable
✓ It is one that can assume the infinity large
number of values corresponding to the points
on a line interval.
✓ are random variables where the observed
numerical values are result of measuring and
may take on any numbers contained within any
numerical interval.
Classification of Random Variable
2. Continuous Random Variable
✓ It can assume an infinite number of values in
an interval between two specific values-values
which are often results of measurement.
✓ A continuous variable is a variable that has
an infinite number of possible values.
