Joel Report

The document discusses the difference between theoretical and conceptual frameworks. A conceptual framework visually represents relationships between concepts, constructs, or variables based on aspects from the theoretical framework. It is used to develop research questions and hypotheses. A theoretical framework provides a foundation of existing theories and knowledge from literature to build a research study. The conceptual framework shows expected connections, while the theoretical framework lays the theoretical grounding. Both are important for structuring research, but serve different purposes.

Theoretical framework and conceptual framework. These are

closely related but distinctly different things (despite some people using them
interchangeably) and it’s important to understand what each means. In my
report we will unpack both theoretical and conceptual frameworks in plain
language along with practical examples, so that you can approach your
research with confidence, and you will understand easily.
Theoretical and conceptual framework are both important in making research.
Now we will differentiate the two. Lets discuss first the conceptual framework.
Slide 2
A conceptual framework is typically a visual representation (although it can
also be written out) of the expected relationships and connections between
various concepts, constructs or variables. In other words, a conceptual
framework visualizes how the researcher views and organizes the various
concepts and variables within their study. This is typically based on aspects
drawn from the theoretical framework, so there is a relationship between the
two.
Quite commonly, conceptual frameworks are used to visualize the
potential causal relationships and pathways that the researcher expects to
find, based on their understanding of both the theoretical literature and the
existing empirical research. Therefore, the conceptual framework is often used
to develop research questions and hypotheses.
Conceptual frame can be drawn the following: flowchart, tree diagram, shape-
based diagram, triangles, concentric circles, overlapping circles, mind maps
and software system.

Slide 3
Conceptual framework shows/provide direction on what is your study all about
and it shows the relationship of the different construct that you want to
investigate in your study that is according to Granatin.
Conceptual framework used or utilizes the use of independent-dependent
model. So what is this model? Lets try to differentiate the two, The independent
variable is the cause. Its value is independent of other variables in your study.
It manipulative variable which means you can change it. The dependent
variable is the effect/result based on the manipulative variable or the
independent variable.
Let’s have an example please determine which is the independent and
dependent variable.
Example : effect of fertilizer on tomato plant growth
Independent – fertilizer
Dependent – tomato plant growth

Slide 4
This an example of conceptual framework showing independent-dependent
model. The very important thing that you need to do in constructing
conceptual framework to understand the flow of your study and knowing the
dependent and independent variable. As you can see, conceptual frameworks
often make use of different shapes, lines and arrows to visualize the
connections and relationships between different components and/or variables.
Ultimately, the conceptual framework provides an opportunity for you to make
explicit your understanding of how everything is connected. So, be sure to
make use of all the visual aids you can – clean design, well-considered colors
and concise text are your friends.
In the model the researcher wanted to investigate the on what are the factors
that affect the behavior of pupils in the public school. but this diagram focuses
on the family, community, teachers, and learning environment or shall we say
the close contact of the pupils as an independent variable while dependent
variable have to parts the internal and external behavior.
Next model is a flowchart model which is used to investigate the leadership
preparation program of school principals in private schools. First collecting the
personal data then proceedto attributes that can contribute to the leadership
development of the principal then evaluate the school leadership of the
principal.
Slide 6
A theoretical framework (also sometimes referred to as a foundation of theory)
is essentially a set of concepts, definitions, and propositions that together
form a structured, comprehensive view of a specific phenomenon. Theoretical
framework describe as the pillar of the house which provide support and also
provide rationale for predicting your research outcome or explain the
relationship among the variables.

In other words, a theoretical framework is a collection of existing theories,

models and frameworks that provides a foundation of core knowledge – a “lay
of the land”, so to speak, from which you can build a research study. For this
reason, it’s usually presented fairly early within the literature review section of
a dissertation, thesis or research paper.

Slide 7
Example : analysis of behavioral problems of pupils in public school setting
Theoretical framework can be written in paragraph form or use of diagrams but
make sure have an explanation below the diagram. This are the most well-
known people use in research like behavioral research or more on sociological
research.

In general, the theoretical framework and the conceptual framework

are closely related concepts, but they differ in terms of focus and purpose.
The theoretical framework is used to lay down a foundation of theory on
which your study will be built, whereas the conceptual framework visualizes
what you anticipate the relationships between concepts, constructs and
variables may be, based on your understanding of the existing literature and
the specific context and focus of your research. In other words,
they’re different tools for different jobs, but they’re neighbors in the toolbox.
