2DCC

This document provides instructions for setting the Reyrolle 2DCC relay in CAPE, the Computer-Aided Protection Engineering System. It describes the relay models available, elements within each model, how to assign instrument transformers, set common taps for protection functions, and assign contact logic for trip and alarm outputs. Settings are made through common taps, with directional elements using voltage or current polarization depending on the style. The summary provides an overview of the key aspects of setting the relay.

Application Note on Setting the Reyrolle 2DCC Relay

I. Relay Models

This note describes the CAPE model of the directional overcurrent relay 2DCC. The data
model of the relay can be found in the database cape_starter.gdb. The relay manufacturer is
“Reyrolle”, the relay type is “2DCC”, and the model is “2DCC”. Under this model, the
following styles are provided:

1. 2DCC-01010101: Three-phase overcurrent and earth fault, 1A relay (non-directional)

2. 2DCC-01050101: Three-phase overcurrent and earth fault, 5A relay (non-directional)
3. 2DCC-01110101: Three-phase overcurrent and sensitive earth fault, 1A relay (non-
directional)
4. 2DCC-01150101: Three-phase overcurrent and sensitive earth fault, 5A relay (non-
directional)
5. 2DCC-D-01010101: Three-phase overcurrent and earth fault, 1A relay (directional)
6. 2DCC-D-01050101: Three-phase overcurrent and earth fault, 5A relay (directional)
7. 2DCC-D-01110101: Three-phase overcurrent (directional) and sensitive earth fault (non-
directional), 1A relay
8. 2DCC-D-01150101: Three-phase overcurrent (directional) and sensitive earth fault (non-
directional), 1A relay

Notice that there are two characters highlighted in the style names above. The first
character is 0 (earth-fault elements) or 1 (sensitive earth-fault elements). The second
character is 1 (1A secondary) or 5 (5A secondary). All style names beginning with “2DCC-D”
are directional relays. The sensitive earth fault elements are always non-directional.

In each style, the rated current is specified on the relay style form.

You can import the data model from cape_starter.gdb to your own database with the
“Import” feature of the DBE.

II. Relay Elements

A. Directional Three-phase Overcurrent Protection

Three-phase overcurrent protection is provided by one definite-time overcurrent element,

and one inverse-time overcurrent element. These are:

1. IOC “HS Phase OC”, with TIMER “HS Phase Fault Delay”: High set element.
Directional control is provided by the directional element DIR “Phase DIR”.

2. TOC “Phase OC”: Inverse-time element. Directional control is provided by DIR “Phase
DIR”.

1
Directional control is available only in the “2DCC-D” styles. The directional element
operates in the forward direction.

The characteristic angle of the phase directional elements can be set to 30° or 45° via the
common tap “Phase DIR C.A.”. This is the angle by which the operating current must lead
the polarizing voltage for maximum torque to develop in the element.

Operation will occur (in the forward direction) if the operating current leads the polarizing
voltage by an angle that is between (CA–87.5°) and (CA+87.5°) where CA is the
characteristic angle setting.

Please see the section on common taps for a listing of taps that must be set for phase
overcurrent protection.

B. Directional Earth-fault Protection

Earth-fault overcurrent protection is provided by one definite-time overcurrent element,

and one inverse-time overcurrent element. These are:

1. IOC “HS Earth OC”, with TIMER “HS Earth Fault Delay”: High set element.
Directional control is provided by the directional element DIR “Earth DIR”.

2. TOC “Earth OC”: Inverse-time element. Directional control is provided by DIR “Earth
DIR”.

Directional control is available only in the “2DCC-D” styles. The directional element
operates in the forward direction.

The characteristic angle of the earth directional elements can be set to 0°, –15°, –45° or
–65° via the common tap “Earth DIR C.A.”. This is the angle by which the operating current
must lead the polarizing voltage for maximum torque to develop in the element.

Please see the section on common taps for a listing of taps that must be set for earth-fault
overcurrent protection.

C. Sensitive Earth-Fault Elements

The relay model consists of one sensitive earth-fault element with three supervised timers:

1. IOC “SEF”: Sensitive earth fault element

2. TIMER “SEF Delay”: Time delay

2
III. Setting the Relay

The 2DCC relay has to be set entirely from common taps. You do not have to visit the
individual element setting forms unless you are assigning an instrument transformer to
that element, or setting its contact logic. (Even these two functions can be performed from
the main relay setting form).

Click on the “Connect Op CT” button to assign the operating CT to all the elements that
need one (DIR, IOC, TOC).

The phase directional elements are voltage polarized. Click on the “Connect Pol VT” button
to choose a polarizing VT for all the directional elements. The earth-fault directional
elements can be voltage or current polarized. If you wish to use current polarization, simply
connect a suitable polarizing CT to the relay. The CAPE model will use that CT as the
polarizing source for the earth-fault directional elements.

The CT and VT quantities for all elements are pre-defined in the library and do not need
any user intervention.

IV. Common Taps

In this section, the common taps that are used by the CAPE model of the relay are listed.
Taps that are not used by the CAPE model are not listed here, although you will find them
in the data model of the relay.

HS Phase Fault OC Pickup High-set IOC element pickup

HS Phase Fault Delay High-set IOC time delay

Phase Fault OC Pickup TOC element pickup

Phase Fault OC Time Multiplier TOC element time multiplier
Phase Fault OC Characteristic TOC element inverse-time characteristic

Phase DIR C.A. Phase DIR element characteristic angle

HS Earth Fault OC Pickup High-set IOC element pickup

HS Earth Fault Delay High-set IOC time delay

Earth Fault OC Pickup TOC element pickup

Earth Fault OC Time Multiplier TOC element time multiplier
Earth Fault OC Characteristic TOC element inverse-time characteristic

Earth DIR C.A. Earth DIR element characteristic angle

SEF Pickup SEF element pickup

SEF Delay SEF element time delay

V. Contact Logic

Contact logic codes can be assigned to the TIMERs, and the TOC elements in the relay.

The suggested contact logic codes are:

Element Designation Suggested Logic Code

TIMER “HS Phase Fault Delay” PH_HS

TOC “Phase OC” PH_TOC

TIMER “HS Earth Fault Delay” EF_HS

TOC “Earth OC” EF_TOC

With the element logic codes as above, we can write the logic expression for the relay as

2DCC_TRIP = (PH_HS OR PH_TOC) OR (EF_HS OR EF_TOC)

That is, the relay will issue a trip if any of the phase overcurrent elements or the earth-
fault overcurrent elements operates. Please note that directional supervision is internal to
the relay, and will automatically be evaluated.

The expression “2DCC_TRIP” can be used in the main LZOP logic expression for the LZOP
to which the 2DCC belongs.

You can use any logic codes you like; the above codes are our suggestions only.
