Application Note on Setting the Reyrolle 2DCC Relay
I. Relay Models
This note describes the CAPE model of the directional overcurrent relay 2DCC. The data
model of the relay can be found in the database cape_starter.gdb. The relay manufacturer is
“Reyrolle”, the relay type is “2DCC”, and the model is “2DCC”. Under this model, the
following styles are provided:
Notice that there are two characters highlighted in the style names above. The first
character is 0 (earth-fault elements) or 1 (sensitive earth-fault elements). The second
character is 1 (1A secondary) or 5 (5A secondary). All style names beginning with “2DCC-D”
are directional relays. The sensitive earth fault elements are always non-directional.
In each style, the rated current is specified on the relay style form.
You can import the data model from cape_starter.gdb to your own database with the
“Import” feature of the DBE.
1. IOC “HS Phase OC”, with TIMER “HS Phase Fault Delay”: High set element.
Directional control is provided by the directional element DIR “Phase DIR”.
2. TOC “Phase OC”: Inverse-time element. Directional control is provided by DIR “Phase
DIR”.
1
Directional control is available only in the “2DCC-D” styles. The directional element
operates in the forward direction.
The characteristic angle of the phase directional elements can be set to 30° or 45° via the
common tap “Phase DIR C.A.”. This is the angle by which the operating current must lead
the polarizing voltage for maximum torque to develop in the element.
Operation will occur (in the forward direction) if the operating current leads the polarizing
voltage by an angle that is between (CA–87.5°) and (CA+87.5°) where CA is the
characteristic angle setting.
Please see the section on common taps for a listing of taps that must be set for phase
overcurrent protection.
1. IOC “HS Earth OC”, with TIMER “HS Earth Fault Delay”: High set element.
Directional control is provided by the directional element DIR “Earth DIR”.
2. TOC “Earth OC”: Inverse-time element. Directional control is provided by DIR “Earth
DIR”.
Directional control is available only in the “2DCC-D” styles. The directional element
operates in the forward direction.
The characteristic angle of the earth directional elements can be set to 0°, –15°, –45° or
–65° via the common tap “Earth DIR C.A.”. This is the angle by which the operating current
must lead the polarizing voltage for maximum torque to develop in the element.
Please see the section on common taps for a listing of taps that must be set for earth-fault
overcurrent protection.
The relay model consists of one sensitive earth-fault element with three supervised timers:

III. Setting the Relay
The 2DCC relay has to be set entirely from common taps. You do not have to visit the
individual element setting forms unless you are assigning an instrument transformer to
that element, or setting its contact logic. (Even these two functions can be performed from
the main relay setting form).
Click on the “Connect Op CT” button to assign the operating CT to all the elements that
need one (DIR, IOC, TOC).
The phase directional elements are voltage polarized. Click on the “Connect Pol VT” button
to choose a polarizing VT for all the directional elements. The earth-fault directional
elements can be voltage or current polarized. If you wish to use current polarization, simply
connect a suitable polarizing CT to the relay. The CAPE model will use that CT as the
polarizing source for the earth-fault directional elements.
The CT and VT quantities for all elements are pre-defined in the library and do not need
any user intervention.
In this section, the common taps that are used by the CAPE model of the relay are listed.
Taps that are not used by the CAPE model are not listed here, although you will find them
in the data model of the relay.

V. Contact Logic
Contact logic codes can be assigned to the TIMERs, and the TOC elements in the relay.
With the element logic codes as above, we can write the logic expression for the relay as
That is, the relay will issue a trip if any of the phase overcurrent elements or the earth-
fault overcurrent elements operates. Please note that directional supervision is internal to
the relay, and will automatically be evaluated.
The expression “2DCC_TRIP” can be used in the main LZOP logic expression for the LZOP
to which the 2DCC belongs.
You can use any logic codes you like; the above codes are our suggestions only.
