Untitled Document-4

This document introduces decimals and their place value system based on powers of 10. Decimals are written using a decimal point to separate the whole number part from the fractional part. Fractions can be converted to decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator. The four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can be performed with decimals by following specific rules such as aligning decimal points or determining the position of the decimal point in products and quotients based on the number of decimal places. Examples are provided to illustrate decimal operations and their real-world applications.

#### Introduction to Decimals

Decimals are another way to represent numbers that are not whole. Unlike fractions, decimals
are based on powers of 10. They are used to express parts of a whole or a group in terms of
tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. Decimals are written using a decimal point, which
separates the whole number part from the fractional part.

#### Place Value in Decimals

In decimals, each digit has a specific place value. The value of a digit is determined by its
position relative to the decimal point. Here are a few examples:

**0.1234**
- The digit "1" is in the tenth place.
- The digit "2" is in the hundredth place.
- The digit "3" is in the thousandth place.
- The digit "4" is in the ten thousandth place.

#### Converting Fractions to Decimals

Fractions can be converted to decimals, and vice versa. To convert a fraction to a decimal,
divide the numerator by the denominator. The result will be the decimal representation of the
fraction. For example:

**3/4 = 0.75**
**1/3 = 0.333... (repeating)**

#### Operations with Decimals

Similar to fractions, we can perform various operations with decimals, including addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division.

1. Addition and Subtraction: When adding or subtracting decimals, we align the decimal points
and add or subtract the digits in each place value column. If necessary, we can add zeros as
placeholders. The decimal point remains in the same position in the result.

2. Multiplication: To multiply decimals, we multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers,
ignoring the decimal point. The decimal point in the product is placed according to the total
number of decimal places in the factors.

3. Division: To divide decimals, we can move the decimal point of the divisor and dividend to the
right until the divisor becomes a whole number. Then, we divide as we would with whole
numbers. The decimal point in the quotient is placed according to the total number of decimal
places in the dividend.

#### Examples:
Let's work through a few examples to illustrate these concepts:
**Example 1: Addition**
```
0.25 + 1.75 = 2.00
```

**Example 2: Subtraction**
```
3.14 - 0.98 = 2.16
```

**Example 3: Multiplication**
```
2.5 * 0.4 = 1.00
```

**Example 4: Division**
```
1.2 ÷ 0.3 = 4.00
```

#### Conclusion
Decimals are an essential part of mathematics and are used in various real-world applications.
Understanding place value and operations with decimals allows us to work with more precise
and accurate representations of numbers. By practicing and exploring decimals, you will
develop a solid foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts and problem-solving.
