DECIMAL

Decimal is a way of writing numbers that are not whole. It involves a dot to separate the whole number part from the decimal place value part. In a decimal number like 128.72, 128 is the whole number and 72 is the decimal part, with the digits read separately as seven two, not seventy two. Decimals can be expanded by placing them in a place value chart. They can also be written in word form, like 7/10 or 8/100. Decimals can be converted to fractions and vice versa using rules like writing the numerator over a denominator with zeros equal to the decimal places. Decimals are classified as like or unlike based on having the same or different number of decimal places. Addition, subtraction,

DECIMAL

Decimal is way of writing a number that is not a whole .

Eg. 3.5cm of rainfall at some places.

Here 3.5 lies between 3 and 4 . A dot(.) seperates the whole and the decimal places.
3.5

Whole number Decimal place value

Decimal point
Decimal place value chart

Note : 128.72

The digits after the decimal point are to be read seperatly as seven two and not as seventy two .
128 – Whole number
72 -- Decimal part

Expanding the decimal :

1) 4000 + 300+ 20+ 7 + 2/10 +3/100
Ans 4327.23
2) 126.023
Ans : 100+20+6+2/100+3/1000
Write the decimal place value:
1) 552.77 - 7tenths or 7/10
2) 770.48 – 8 hundreths or 8/100.
Convert into decimals
Case 1 :
When the denominator is a multiple of 10 , write the numerator and place the decimal point after
as many digits from the right to left as the number of zeros in the denominator.
Eg: 4/100 = 0.04

Case 2 : When the denominator is not a multiple of 10 , then write an equivalent fraction for the
given fraction where the denominator ends with zero and then write the decimal.
Eg. 4/5 = 8/10 = 0.8
Conversion of decimals to fraction :
1) 5.3 = 5 + 0.3
= 5 + 3/10
5 3
=1 + 10
5×10 3
= 1×10 + 10

50 3
= 10 + 10

= 53 / 10
3
= 5 10.

LIKE AND UNLIKE DECIMALS

Like decimals – Decimals having same number of decimal places
Eg. 9.82, 5.72 , 3.55
Unlike decimals – Decimals having different number of decimal places .
Eg: 76.43 , 665.776 , 3.4
Addition of decimals
To add decimals we have to follow these steps :

Eg.
Subtraction of Decimals
To subtract decimals we have to follow these steps :

Eg .

Multiplication of Decimals :
For multiplication of a decimal with whole number

Step 1 : Multiply the numbers without the decimal point ( as a whole numbers )

Step 2 : In the product , place the decimal point of the given decimal number places.

Eg:

To multiply a decimal with multiplication of 10 , just move the decimal point to the right by as many
digits of zeros in the multiplier
To multiply the decimal number with the decimal number ,
Step 1 : Ignore the decimal point and multiply them as a whole number but make sure to count the decimal places of
both the numbers

Step2 : count the decimal places of the numbers

Step 3 : Add the decimal numbers and in the product, place the decimal points .

Eg :
DIVISION OF DECIMALS
Division of a decimal by a whole number :
To divide a decimal number by a whole number , divide as we divide the whole place the decimal at the point where
we divide decimal in the dividend.

Eg :
Dividing decimals with multiples of 10

Eg :

Dividing decimals with decimals

To divide decimals with decimals we need to follow these steps :
