Pre-construction activities need to be carried out by the Main Contractor prior to the start of the
Guardrails installation by the Sub-contractor. These activities include finalising the Guardrails
alignment, detailed design finalisation, mobilisation, notification of residents, setting-up of
guardrails and traffic control.

Step 2
We will use spanner to unscrew the guardrails from one another and use the pick-axe and shovels to
dig the sides of the existing guardrails to the foot.
Step 3
We will use shovels to load the rubble into wheel barrows and move away from site to an approved
area by local authorities. The area where new work needs to be carried out will be cleaned and
barricaded.
Removed guardrails will be placed in an area where they cannot fall on someone or become a trip
hazard.
Activity 2
The survey crew are the first personnel from the contractor’s workforce to enter the site to
commence the main construction activities. The setting out of the works should
be scheduled to commence at least 2 days prior to the remainder of the construction activity
group 1 activities. This work will be carried out with small foreman crew using surveying
instruments. Setting-out pegs will be placed at all boundaries, changes in direction
and intermediate sightings on the proposed centre line and the extremities of the working
easement. Part of the setting-out crew’s duties is to identify any existing services that cross or are in
close proximity to the pavement and supervise the trial hole crew. The trial hole crew will hand
excavate to expose, identify and determine the exact location of all existing services if any. This data
will be recorded and transferred to the Main Contractor for incorporation into the final guardrails
design.
The posts will be installed on the excavated area vertically and compacted on the sides to 98% of
modified AASHTO maximum density. Concrete will be used to hold the posts intact and making the
foundation strong.

We will check the levels of the earthworks conform to the specifications and drawings and where
necessary gets the contractor to take remedial action. Depressions shall be filled with material that
has the physical properties specified for surface material in SANS 1200 ME, and the material shall be
compacted to 98% of modified AASHTO maximum density.
The guardrails will be connected from one end to the other and in-between, they will be connected
by screws.
Activity 5 – Compaction
Rammer will be used to level the the whole unit. The manner of compaction of units shall be such
that damage to the units is prevented. By the end of each day, compaction shall be completed to not
closer than 1 m from any free edge. A uniform even surface shall be obtained over sides of the
guardrails.
Site De-establishment
On completion of the project, the site will be cleaned, site will be handed back to the Main
Contractor and the following will be removed from site:
• Plant
• Rubble
• Barricades
