Arithmetic Sequence Lesson Plan

This document outlines a lesson plan on arithmetic sequences. The objectives are for students to determine the next term of an arithmetic sequence, solve problems involving arithmetic sequences, and relate arithmetic sequences to real life situations. The lesson defines arithmetic sequences as lists of numbers that follow a regular pattern, where each term is found by adding a common difference to the previous term. Examples are worked through to find specific terms. Students practice solving problems to find terms of arithmetic sequences given information like the first term and common difference. Real-world applications are discussed as well. Assessments are included to evaluate student learning.

Arithmetic Sequence

I. Objectives

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of

sequences, polynomials, and polynomial equations.

Performance Standard: The learner should be able to formulate and solve problems
involving sequences, polynomials, and polynomial equations in different disciplines
through appropriate and accurate representations.

Learning Competencies/Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. determine the next term of an arithmetic sequence
2. solve problems involving arithmetic sequence
3. relate arithmetic sequence in real life situations

II. Content
Topic: Arithmetic Sequence

III. Learning Resources

References: DepEd Learning Materials – Module 2

Other Learning Resources: Learning Activity Sheet 1

IV. Procedures
A. Review/Recall/Motivation/Connecting to Prior Knowledge
Prayer
5 – minute 5 – item Drill
1. It is a list of elements that follow a special rule or pattern.
2. What is the sum of the first 5 terms of the sequence 3, 5, 7, 9, …?
3. It is the sum of all the terms of a sequence.
4. What is the 8th term of the sequence 5, 8, 11, 14, …
5. A sequence whose next term is obtained by multiplying a common number by the
previous term.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson

Concepts:
Determine whether the following list of numbers is a sequence or not. If it is a sequence,
state the pattern or rule it follows.
a) 3, 7, 11, 15, …
b) 12, 7, 2, -3, …
c) -21, -31, -41, -51, …
d) 45, 57, 69, 81, …
e) 38, 23, 8, -7, …

(Students are expected to share their answers)

The teacher will reveal that the sequences are called arithmetic sequence and will ask the
students to define the arithmetic sequence based on their observations.
C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson
A. Example 1: Determine the next three terms of the sequence 12, 15, 18, …
(Students are expected to answer the problem with the teacher)

Example 2: Find A7 of the arithmetic sequence whose first term is 19 and the
common difference is 3.
(Students are expected to share their solution and answers)

Example 3: Find A10 of the geometric sequence whose first term is 12 and 3rd
term is 32.
(Students are expected to share their solution and answers)

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skill

A problem will be presented:
1. What is the 50th term of the sequence 8, 13, 18, 23, …?
The following questions will be asked:
a.) What are we trying to find?
b.) What is the first term and the common difference of the sequence?
c.) Will you be able to determine the 50th term of the sequence in less than a
minute?
d.) Is there a formula in determining the nth term of an arithmetic sequence?

(The teacher and the students will derive the formula for the nth term of an
arithmetic sequence)

E. Developing Mastery
Problems will be presented.
1. What is the 8th term of an arithmetic sequence whose 1st term is 8 and common
difference is 7?
2. What is the 15th term of an arithmetic sequence whose 1st and 2nd terms are 18 and
15 respectively?
3. What is the 20th term of an arithmetic sequence whose first term and common
difference are 9 and – 5 respectively?

(Students will be guided in answering the problem.)

F. Finding Practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

 The students will be asked what part of their daily activity they apply or may apply the
concepts of arithmetic sequence.
 The teacher will give idea about the ipon challenge to where a person saves based on a
pattern.

H. Generalization/Abstraction
Students are expected to answer the following questions.

1. What is an arithmetic sequence?

2. How do arithmetic sequences behave based on the common difference?
I. Evaluating Learning
