6) Hacksaw Used in Fitting

Hack sawing involves cutting metal using a hacksaw blade. There are three main types of hacksaw frames: solid, adjustable, and tubular. A solid frame has fixed holders and guides for rigidly holding a blade. An adjustable frame uses strips and notches to adjust for different blade lengths. A tubular frame is made of steel tubes that can be adjusted using a screw. Proper technique and safety precautions should be followed such as clamping the workpiece, using the full length of each blade stroke, and changing blades when teeth are broken.

C) Hacksaws

Hack sawing is a process of cutting the metal in the form of small particles by using a cutting
tool known as hacksaw and blade. The following types of hack saws frames are used in fitting.
1) Solid hacksaw frame 2) Adjustable hacksaw frame 3) Tubular hacksaw frame.

1) Solid Hack Saw Frame :- It consists of solid frame, fixed holder, movable holder, guide
piece, handle, pin (prongs), wing nut. A fixed holder is fitted at the back end of the frame which
is attached along with the handle. A guide piece is fitted at the front end of the frame by means
of rivets. This guide piece has a square slot in which movable holder slides. A hack saw blade
is held in between fixed holder and movable holder by means of pin(prongs). The tension is
provided on the blade by tightening the wing nut. The frame and other parts are made from
mild steel, blade is made from High Speed Steel and handle is made from wood. This frame is
used to hold 12 inches blade rigidly. A hacksaw is used for cutting material of various cross
sections. It is also used for cutting slots and circular shape objects.

2) Adjustable Hacksaw Frame :- It consists of adjustable frame, fixed holder, movable holder,
guide piece, handle, pin (prongs), wing nut, strip. The frame has two solid parts. One part is
fitted along with the fixed holder and other part is fitted along with the guide piece. Both parts
are joined together by using a strip. This frame has notches in which strip pins are placed and
frame is adjusted. A hack saw blade is held in between fixed holder and movable holder by
means of pin. (prongs) The tension is provided on the blade by tightening the wing nut. The
frame and other parts are made from mild steel, blade is made from High Speed Steel and
handle is made from wood. This frame is used to hold 10 inches or 12 inches blade rigidly. A
hacksaw is used for cutting material of various cross sections. It is also used for cutting slots
and circular shape objects.

3) Tubular Hacksaw Frame :-This frame is made from a steel tube and can be adjusted for
different blade lengths by means of screw. It has a pistol grip handle along with steel tube at
the back side. It has another steel tube which can be inserted in the pistol grip steel tube
provided at back side. The front steel tube has a slot for inserting a moveable holder. A hack
saw blade is held in between fixed holder and moveable holder by means of prongs. The
tension is provided on the blade by tightening the wing nut.

Types of Saw Blades:-

1) All Hard Blade :- It is fully hard except nearer to the pin holes.
2) Flexible Blade :- It is hardened at the teeth only. This blade is used by the beginners.
3) Spring Back Blade :- It is hardened at the teeth and the remaining portion is spring
tempered.

Material of the Blade :-

1) High Carbon Steel Blade :- This blade is used for cutting mild steel, brass, copper and
aluminum.
2) Low Tungsten Alloy Steel Blade :- This blade is used for cutting mild steel and carbon steel.
This blade contains tungsten and chromium.
3) High Speed Steel Blade :- This blade has very high wear resistance and ability to cut harder
material.

Pitch of Blade.:- It is grading according to the number of teeth per 25mm.

a) Coarse blade (18T) is most suitable for soft material and thick work piece.
b) Medium blade (24T) is suitable for steel pipe.
c) Fine blade (32T) is suitable for the thin metal sheet and thin copper pipe.

Set :- The teeth have a "set" to either side alternately, which causes the blade to cut a slit
wider than the thickness of the blade, to prevent jamming.

Procedure Used for Hack sawing :-

1) Select the flexible blade for soft metals and all hard blade for hard metals.
2) The blade must be fitted in such a way that the position of the teeth should be in forward
direction.
3) Before doing hack sawing, by using triangular file produce a ‘V’ shape notch at the portion.
4) While doing hack sawing, use full length of the blade.

5) If the blade brakes during hack sawing, then use the new blade very carefully.

Safety Precautions used while doing hack sawing :-

1) Clamp the work piece rigidly in the bench vice.
2) The cutting action is carried on the forward action only. So the blade must be mounted
with its teeth pointing forward.
3) Suitable tension should be applied on the blade to avoid breakage or loosen.
4) Change the blade if some teeth are broken.
5) Avoid rapid and erratic strokes of cut.
6) Avoid too much pressure.
7) While doing hack sawing use full length of the blade.

Exercise :-
1) Answer the following questions.
a) What is hack sawing?
b) State the types of hack saw frames used in fitting.
c) Explain solid hacksaw frame along with a labelled diagram of it.
d) Explain adjustable hacksaw frame along with a labelled diagram of it.
e) Explain tubular hacksaw frame along with a labelled diagram of it.
f) Write down the material of hacksaw blade.
g) Write a note on the pitch of hacksaw blade used in fitting.
h) What safety precautions you will obey used while doing hack sawing.
