Teacher shows a 4-digit number “4321” on the board by number cards.

Questions for students:

 How to read this number?
(Four thousand, three hundred and twenty-one.)

(4 – 4000, 3 – 300, 2 – 20, 1 – 1.)

Teacher ask students to make some more 4-digit numbers with number cards
5’
(4321)

(Answers: 1234,1324,1423, 2134,2314, 2413, 2431, 3124, 3142, 3214, 3241, 4123,
4132, 4213, 4321……)

12’ Making a 4-digit number

Teacher shows number cards (2, 5, 6, 8) by using visualiser and invite one student Number
to make a 4-digit number. cards x 18
sets
Teacher gives out the worksheets and get students to prepare number cards 2 (1, 4,
7, 9). Then, teacher instructs the students to make a 4-digit number and records it in Activity
the worksheet. worksheet 1

Teacher gives students around two minutes and gets the 4-digit numbers from
students.

Teacher shows number cards (1, 9, 6, 0) by using visualizer and ask the students
can they make the following numbers: 0169, 0196, 0619, 0691, 0916, 0961.
Teacher tells the students that the thousands digit cannot be zero for a 4-digit
number.

2
Teacher instructs the students to make a 4-digit number by number cards 3 (1, 9, 6,
0) and records it in the worksheet.

Teacher gives students around two minutes and gets the 4-digit numbers from
students.

12’ Making the largest and smallest 4-digit number

Activity
Teacher show the number cards (1, 2, 3, 4) ask students:
worksheet 1
1. Can you form the largest 4-digit number by using 1-4 cards? What is it?
(Answer: Yes; 4321)
2. Can you form the smallest 4-dgit number by using 1-4 cards? What is it?
(Answer: Yes; 1234)

Teacher shows the “4321” and “1234” on the board, and let students to discover
the order of the forming the largest and smallest 4-digit numbers.

Students can tell how to make the largest 4-digit number (The order of digits is
counting back from left to right.) and how to make the smallest 4-digit number (The
order of digits is counting on from left to right.)

Then, teacher records the result in question 1(b) and (c). Number
cards 1 x 18
sets

Teacher gives out number cards (1, 9, 6, 0) and instructs the students to make a 4-
digit number, the largest and smallest 4-digit number in question 2.

3
Teacher gives students around two minutes and checks the answers with students.

Teacher gives students around five minutes to finish question 3 and 4 without using
number cards. Then, teacher checks the answers with students.

3’ Conculsion

Questions for students:

 How to make the largest 4-digit number?
(The order of digits is counting back.)
 How to make the smallest 4-digit number?
(The order of digits is counting on.)

** Teacher can use a 4-digit number as example in order to help students to answer
the above questions.

4
Lesson 2 Motivation
5’
Teacher writes four different digits (1, 2, 0, 9) on the board.

Questions for students:

 What is the largest 4-digit number made by these four digits? (9210)
 Is it an odd number or even number? (Even number.)
 What is the smallest 4-digit number made by these four digits? (1029)
 Is it an odd number or even number? (Odd number.)

Teacher reminds that the order of digits in the largest 4-digit number is counting
back and that in the smallest 4-digit number is counting on. (**Teacher can also
revise the odd and even number with students.)
10’ Making the largest odd 4-digit number

Teacher use the above digit (1, 2, 0, 9) as an example and introduce how to make
the largest odd 4-digit number from the largest 4-digit number.
Activity
worksheet 2
Teacher gives out the worksheets and number cards (2, 5, 6, 8) and instructs the
students to make the largest and largest odd 4-digit number in question 2. Then, Number
teacher gives students around three minutes and checks the answers with students. cards x 18
sets
Making the largest even 4-digit number

Teacher gives out number cards (1, 4, 7, 9) and instructs the students to make the
largest and largest even 4-digit number in question 3. Then, teacher gives students
around three minutes and checks the answers with students.
10’ Making the smallest even 4-digit number

Teacher use the above digit (7, 3, 9, 4) as an example and introduce how to make
the smallest even 4-digit number from the smallest 4-digit number.
Activity
worksheet 2
Teacher instructs the students to make the smallest and smallest odd 4-digit number
in question 4. Then, teacher gives students around three minutes and checks the Number
answers with students. cards x 18
sets
Making the smallest odd 4-digit number

Teacher gives out number cards 2 (1, 9, 6, 0) and instructs the students to make the
largest and largest even 4-digit number in question 5. Then, teacher gives students
around three minutes and checks the answers with students.
7’ Consolidation

Teacher gives students around five minutes to finish the “Challenge” in textbook TB 2C p.__
2C p.__. On top of making the smallest 4-digit number, they are also asked to
make:
i. The largest 4-digit number;
ii. The smallest even 4-digit number and
iii. The largest even 4-digit number

5
3’ Conclusion

Questions for students:

 What is the smallest odd 4-digit number made by 3, 4, 8, and 0? (4083)
 What is the largest even 4-digit number made by 5, 7, 9, and 8? (9758)
