CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE

Classroom environment has been a topic of interest among educators and researchers for

many years, as it is believed to play a crucial role in shaping the academic performance of

students. The classroom environment refers to the physical and psychological conditions of the

classroom, including the furniture, layout, lighting, temperature, and social interactions. Many

studies have shown that the quality of the classroom environment has a significant impact on

students' academic performance, motivation, and engagement.

Research has shown that students who study in a comfortable, supportive, and

stimulating classroom environment are more likely to perform better academically than those

who study in a dull and uninspiring environment. For example, studies have found that classroom

design factors such as seating arrangements, lighting, and temperature can significantly affect

students' motivation, attention, and cognitive performance. Moreover, a positive social

environment, such as positive teacher-student interactions, can also contribute to higher

academic achievement.

In addition, classroom environment can also impact students' emotional well-being,

which in turn affects their academic performance. A positive classroom environment can promote

positive emotions such as joy, interest, and curiosity, while a negative environment can cause

negative emotions such as boredom, anxiety, and stress. Therefore, creating a positive classroom
environment that fosters emotional and social connections can be critical to supporting students'

academic success.

Overall, the classroom environment plays a vital role in shaping the academic

performance of students. Understanding the impact of classroom environment on students'

academic achievement can help educators create learning spaces that are conducive to optimal

learning and achievement.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study are:

1. To determine the impact of classroom environment on the academic performance of the

students

2. To identify the different factors that contribute to a positive or negative classroom

environment

3. To determine the correlation between classroom design, teacher behavior, and student

academic achievement.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research study on the impact of classroom environment to the academic

performance of the students may serve as a guide and give benefits to the following;
To the Students: The study's findings can help students to understand the importance of a

conducive learning environment for their academic performance. They can use this information

to communicate with their teachers and parents about the changes they would like to see in

their classroom environment to improve their learning experience.

academic performance. By understanding how classroom environment affects learning,

teachers can tailor their teaching approaches to create a more conducive environment for their

students. This may include changes to classroom layout, lighting, seating arrangements, and

other environmental factors.

To the Parents: Parents can benefit from the study's findings by understanding how classroom

environment impacts their child's academic performance. They can use this information to

communicate with their child's teacher and school administrators to ensure that their child is

learning in a supportive environment.

To Other Researcher: Other researchers can build on this study's findings and explore other

factors that may affect student learning, such as technology integration, teacher training, and

student motivation.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

student academic performance, as these factors are beyond the scope of the study. Additionally,

the study will only use self-reported data from students, and not objective measures of

academic performance such as standardized test scores.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes studies and literatures which the researchers deemed relevant to

the study, thus, enabling them to conceptualize the solution to the problem. This will help in

giving the reader a better understanding.

Education is a fundamental aspect of human development, and the classroom

environment plays a crucial role in shaping the learning experience of students. A classroom is

not just a physical space where students gather for instruction; it is a dynamic setting that can

significantly impact their academic performance. In this chapter, we will search into the various

ways in which the classroom environment can influence students' academic achievements. The

classroom environment encompasses a wide range of factors, including the physical layout,

classroom resources, teacher-student interactions, and peer interactions. These elements work

in tandem to create a unique learning environment that can either facilitate or hinder students'

academic progress. Research has shown that the classroom environment can significantly impact

students' cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development, ultimately affecting their academic

performance.
Related literature

According to Smith and Johnson (2018) in the United States they explored the impact of

classroom environment on student learning. The researchers found that a well-designed and

organized classroom with appropriate furniture arrangements, proper lighting, and comfortable

temperature positively influenced student engagement, motivation, focus and performance in

the classroom. The study further highlighted that a conducive classroom environment can reduce

distractions, enhance student attention and concentration, and facilitate effective teaching and

learning.

A study conducted by Santos and Reyes (2019) in the Philippines examined the impact of

classroom environment on academic performance among students in public schools. The

researchers found that factors such as classroom layout, lighting, ventilation, and cleanliness

significantly influenced student performance. The study revealed that students who studied in

well-maintained classrooms with adequate facilities and a positive learning atmosphere exhibited

higher levels of academic performance and achievement.

Chen and Wong (2021) conducted a study that investigated the relationship between

classroom environment and academic achievement among the secondary school students. The

researchers found that factors such as classroom design, seating arrangement, and availability of

learning resources significantly influenced students' academic performance. The study also

revealed that students who perceived their classroom environment as conducive to learning

exhibited higher levels of motivation, engagement, and achievement.

Related studies

A study by Gogoi, R., & Ghosh, R. (2020) examined the relationship between psychological

classroom environment and students' academic performance by analyzing data from 37 studies

conducted internationally. The study found that positive psychological classroom environment,

including factors such as teacher-student relationship, classroom management, and classroom

climate, significantly influenced students' academic performance. For example, classrooms with

positive teacher-student relationships, effective classroom management, and a supportive

classroom climate were found to have a positive impact on students' academic achievement. The

study highlighted the significance of creating a positive psychological environment in classrooms

to improve students' academic performance.

In a study conducted by Kim et al. (2020) in South Korea, the researchers investigated the

impact of classroom lighting on middle school students' cognitive performance. The study

compared two different types of lighting conditions - natural light and artificial light - and found

that students in classrooms with natural light performed better on cognitive tasks, such as

attention, memory, and information processing, compared to those in classrooms with artificial

light. The study emphasized the significance of providing classrooms with ample natural lighting

to optimize students' cognitive performance.

In the Philippines, Gomez (2022) conducted a study to examine the influence of classroom

environment on student learning. The study was conducted in a public elementary school and

investigated how classroom design, seating arrangement, and classroom resources affected

students' academic performance. The results indicated that a well-designed classroom

environment, with flexible seating options, ample learning resources, and a visually appealing
ambiance, positively influenced students' motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes.

Students in such classrooms showed higher levels of academic performance compared to

students in classrooms with traditional seating arrangements and limited resources.

Synthesis

The classroom environment plays a significant role in shaping the academic performance

of students. Research indicates that the physical, social, and emotional aspects of the classroom

environment can impact students' learning outcomes and academic performance and

achievement. A conducive classroom environment that promotes engagement, motivation,

positive relationships, emotional well-being, and access to appropriate resources can enhance

students' learning outcomes and academic achievement.

Despite these research findings have some similarities, they also have a notable

difference. Each study investigated different factors of classroom environment that affect the

student’s performance and achievement. However, all of the studies point out the importance of

classroom environment to the academic performance of the students. These findings have

implications for educators, policymakers, and school administrators to prioritize creating

conducive classroom environments that promote optimal learning experiences for students,

leading to improved academic performance.
