Chapter 4
Chapter 4
This chapter presents the results and discussion of the study on the relationship between the
learning environment and the academic performance of students at Holy Rosary Academy of Las Piñas
City. The study's main objective is to investigate how the classroom environment impacts students’
academic performance, focusing on the factors of productivity, attendance, and grades. The study also
seeks to understand the extent to which the learning environment influences academic achievements
and identify factors that affect this relationship.
Results
- Table 1 shows the relationship between classroom environment factors and the productivity
levels of students. Data was gathered through a survey, which included responses on factors such as
lighting, seating arrangement, noise levels, and classroom decoration. These factors were ranked based
on their perceived influence on students’ ability to concentrate and complete tasks.
Explanation: As seen from Table 1, the most significant factor influencing productivity is noise levels,
where 50% of respondents indicated that a quiet classroom environment led to high productivity.
Lighting also played a considerable role, with 40% of respondents linking good lighting to higher
productivity. In contrast, classroom decoration and seating arrangement had less impact, although they
still contributed to moderate productivity.
2. Impact of the Classroom on Attendance
- A strong correlation was observed between classroom environment and student attendance.
According to the survey, students reported feeling more motivated to attend classes in classrooms with
comfortable seating arrangements, sufficient lighting, and an overall positive atmosphere.
Explanation: The graph illustrates that the classrooms with well-maintained environments—such as
appropriate lighting, seating arrangements, and minimal noise—resulted in higher student attendance.
Factors like the overall classroom climate also contributed to students' willingness to attend.
- Table 3 shows how classroom environment factors correlate with students’ grades, assessed
through their reported average marks over the semester.
Explanation: Noise levels again emerged as the most influential factor, with 60% of students reporting
grade improvement in quieter classrooms. Lighting and seating arrangement were also positively
correlated with grade improvement, though less significantly than noise levels. Classroom decoration
showed the least impact on grade improvement.
INTERPRETATIONS
- The themes identified through coding provide important insights into the relationship between
the classroom environment and academic performance. These themes were derived from the students'
responses and formed the basis for understanding the key factors that influence their learning
experiences.
A. Productivity
Self-Regulation Methods
- Students who reported using self-regulation techniques (such as creating personal study
schedules or minimizing distractions) were more likely to indicate higher productivity. In classrooms
with minimal noise and appropriate lighting, students were able to manage their time and focus
more effectively, leading to increased productivity. This theme aligns with the findings that quieter
environments were preferred, as they allowed students to practice self-regulation without external
disruptions.
B. Attendance
- Students who faced academic challenges expressed a greater need for teachers to be patient
and understanding, particularly in stressful or noisy classroom environments. A classroom that
offered a calm and structured atmosphere was seen as conducive to reducing anxiety and supporting
students through academic difficulties. The results suggest that environments that promote patience
and understanding are essential for maintaining student morale and motivation to attend.
C. Grades
Approachability of Teachers:
- Teachers who were accessible for consultations or provided consistent feedback were noted as
positively influencing productivity and attendance. In classrooms where students felt that teachers
were approachable, students reported being more motivated to attend and engage in their studies.
The presence of supportive teacher-student interactions led to greater academic involvement and
ultimately better academic performance, as students were more likely to improve their grades.
“WHAT ARE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCES STUDENTS'
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS.”
- According to this article, modifications in classroom layout have a major impact on students'
academic performance by increasing focus and engagement. Students responded positively to changes
such as relocating desks to eliminate distractions, which had a direct influence on their productivity and
academic success. This is congruent with the findings of Mogas-Recalde and Palau (2020), who argue
that classroom circumstances, such as lighting and layout, influence cognitive processes and productivity.
Their findings highlight the significance of a well-structured and dynamic learning environment, which
promotes better interaction between students and teachers, resulting in enhanced academic
performance (Mogas-Recalde & Palau, 2020).
- The preference for structured classroom arrangements was evident, as students reported that a
well-organized space improved their focus and productivity. A structured classroom environment, where
seating and materials were arranged logically, contributed to better attendance and academic
performance.
- According to this article, excessive noise, both inside and outside the classroom, has a negative
impact on pupils' academic performance. Acoustic circumstances in a classroom are crucial for speech
intelligibility and focus, as high background noise levels interfere with learning. According to Salary et al.
(2018), enhancing classroom acoustics by regulating noise and reverberation is critical to producing a
conducive learning environment. According to Earthman's research (quoted in Salary et al., 2018), noise
levels that exceed specified thresholds can have a negative impact on pupils' academic performance. As
a result, regulating acoustics to meet established criteria, such as keeping background noise below 35
dB, could improve academic performance and productivity (Salary et al., 2018).
Stricter Classroom Rules
- The presence of clear and enforced classroom rules was seen as a necessary factor for
maintaining focus and discipline. When students perceived classroom rules to be consistently followed,
they reported feeling more motivated to attend and perform well academically.
- Students in classrooms with revised seating arrangements, such as seating that allowed for
group work or easier teacher access, reported higher levels of engagement and academic performance.
This reflects the need for seating that enhances both collaboration and individual focus.
Infrastructure Upgrades
- Students also highlighted the importance of infrastructure upgrades, such as improved lighting
and better seating, as contributing to a more effective learning environment. These upgrades were
associated with a positive impact on both attendance and grades.
“WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS?”
Social Influence
- Peer interactions were found to play a significant role in productivity and attendance. In
classrooms where students felt supported by their peers, they were more likely to attend and participate
actively in lessons. A positive social atmosphere contributed to better academic outcomes.
Teacher Accessibility
- The availability of teachers for one-on-one assistance was frequently cited as a critical factor in
overcoming academic challenges. Students who felt that teachers were accessible for help outside of
regular class hours were more likely to improve their grades and feel confident in their academic
abilities.
Classroom Disruptions:
- Disruptions, such as noise and lack of focus, were identified as major barriers to both
productivity and attendance. Students reported being less likely to attend classes that were chaotic or
distracting, which negatively impacted their grades.
Teacher-Related Disruptions
- Disruptions caused by teachers, such as inconsistent teaching styles or lack of feedback, were
also identified as affecting academic performance. Students who experienced these disruptions reported
difficulties in maintaining focus, which in turn affected their grades.
Environmental Factors
- Environmental factors such as classroom temperature, lighting, and seating were consistently
linked to academic performance. Students in classrooms with adequate lighting and minimal distractions
tended to perform better and were more likely to attend regularly.
- The role of teacher support was crucial in helping students overcome academic challenges.
Teachers who provided consistent guidance and support, especially during difficult assignments or
exams, were instrumental in helping students improve their grades.
