Tutorial 3 (Pump Power Efficiency)

This document contains 4 questions regarding pneumatic and hydraulic actuators. Question 1 involves calculating load lifted, distance moved, and output horsepower given pump specifications and operating parameters. Question 2 involves calculating eccentricity needed for a vane pump given its dimensions and displacement. Question 3 involves calculating volumetric efficiency of a gear pump given its dimensions and actual versus rated flow. Question 4 involves calculating various pump parameters like displacement, input horsepower, torque, and percentage of power delivered to load given a hydraulic system diagram and specifications.

Tutorial #2: Pump power & efficiency

(23MTRN10I)

Q1) An operator makes 20 complete cycles during a 15-sec interval using the hand pump shown in
Figure 1. Each complete cycle consists of two pump
strokes (intake and power). The pump has a 5 cm-
diameter piston and the load cylinder has a 10.16 cm
diameter piston. The average hand force is 88.9 N
during each power stroke.
a. How much load can be lifted?
b. Through what distance will the load be moved
during the 15-sec interval
assuming no oil leakage? The pump piston has a 7.62
cm stroke.
c. What is the output HP assuming 90% efficiency? Figure 1

Q2) A vane pump is to have a volumetric displacement of 115 cm3. It has a rotor diameter of 63.5 mm,
a cam ring diameter of 88.9 mm, and a vane width of 50.8 mm. What must be the eccentricity?

Q3) A gear pump has a 82.6-mm outside diameter, a 57.2-mm inside diameter, and a 25.4-mm width.
If the actual pump flow rate at 1800 rpm and rated pressure is 0.00183 m3/s, what is the volumetric
efficiency?

Q4) For the fluid power system of Figure 2, the following data are given:
cylinder piston diameter = 0.2m
cylinder rod diameter = 0.1m
extending speed of cylinder = 0.0762 m/s
external load on cylinder = 178 kN
pump volumetric efficiency = 92%
pump mechanical efficiency = 90%
Figure 2
pump speed = 1800 rpm
pump inlet pressure = -27.6 kPa
The total pressure drop in the line from the pump discharge port to the blank end of the cylinder is
517 kPa. The total pressure drop in the return line from the rod end of the cylinder is 345 kPa
Determine the:
a. Volumetric displacement of the pump
b. Input HP required to drive the pump
c. Input torque required to drive the pump
d. Percentage of pump input power delivered to the load
