TOOLKIT LAYOUT
The workspace is mainly divided into four areas: The Main Toolbar (at the top), the
Subtitle Table (on the right), the Video Preview Player (on the left) and the Timeline (at
the bottom).
You can adjust the size of each component by dragging the gray border between two
components. You can also show/hide each using the "Layout" menu.
MAIN TOOLBAR
3
• Project Settings: Allows the user to configure different parameters that most of
the time are requested by client specification for subtitle delivery. Please note
that, unless told otherwise, you will receive the project with already locked
in settings for you to work on.
• Hotkeys: When clicked, presents a list of the available shortcuts and hotkeys and
the description of what each one does.
• Theme Toggle: Allows the user to toggle between a light and a dark theme.
• Box: This menu allows the user to place boxed background on subtitles for better
readability and to select which type of box will be placed.
• Outline: Allows the user to select which type out outline will be present in each
of the letters of the subtitles.
• Line Align: Enables the user to choose the alignment of each of the subtitles. The
software allows subtitles to be aligned to the left, to the center or to the right.
• Justify: Within the previously selected alignment, allows the user to choose how
the subtitles will be justified.
• Vertical Align: Changes the vertical position of the subtitles on the screen. The
user may choose from three default positions: bottom of the screen, middle
of the screen and top of the screen. Users may also manually raise/drop
subtitles by using the “move 1 line up/down command”.
• Split Subtitle: Splits the current subtitle into two different subtitles.
• Merge Subtitle: Merges the currently selected subtitle with the
previous/following one.
• Add Subtitle: Adds a new subtitle to the existing project. The user may choose if
the subtitle will be added before or after the selected one.
• Line Font: Defines the font that will be used in the current selected line.
OOONA’s Subtitling Toolkit saves up to two different fonts that may be
configured in the project settings menu. (This setting mostly applies to older
non-Unicode formats, such as PAC and 890, since they allow only one
proprietary character set per subtitle line).
• Delete Subtitle: Deletes the current subtitle.
Project: Contains commands for the basic file operations concerning subtitle files: New,
Open, Save, Rename, etc.
Edit: The standard menu containing the following operations: Undo, Redo, as well as
operations specific to the program: Find, Replace and Jump To
4
Timecode: Timecode-related menu commands, such as offset, frame rate conversion
and clearing TC values
Subtitle: Commands applied to the current subtitle: insert, remove, etc., as well as
templated scripts for checks and fixes
Settings: Contains menu commands for customizing various settings, such as project
settings, user config, hotkeys, etc.
Media: Contains menu commands for opening video/audio files or video URLs, as well
as setting Media Start Time code and loading separate waveform and shot-change data.
Manual Save
You can click on click on "Project" -> "Save" in the menu or the "Save" icon:
You can also use the save hotkey. The default value is "ctrl+s". You can check what
hotkey is associated with the "Save current project" action in the hotkeys dialog.
TIMING
WORK MODE VS REVIEW MODE
It's easy: Review - for previewing & Work - for editing.
Review mode will update the visible subtitles on the video according to the current
video time and will also automatically select the same subtitle row on the table.
Work mode will show the currently selected subtitle on the video and will not change
the selected subtitle when the current time changes.
5
HOW TO SET MEDIA START TC
The media start TC is set at the bottom "Open video/audio file" dialog (under the
"Media" menu).
When you change the value in that field the changes will take effect immediately.
READING SPEED
On the bottom of each subtitle cell, users can find a bar that indicates, using different
colors, the reading speed for each of the subtitles:
• Red: The subtitle has a reading speed considered too high and should be
condensed or have its cues adjusted;
• Orange: The subtitle’s reading speed has reached its highest limit;
• Green: Subtitle’s reading speed is optimal.
TIMECODE RECUT/OFFSET
In this menu, users are able to perform recut/offset operations to the subtitles. These
can be done in two ways.
The first one is by Index. This simply means that the user selects the first subtitle he
wants to recut/offset and the last one, therefore creating an interval.
The second one is by Time. The user can, similarly to the first option, define the interval
to recut/offset by selecting the first in cue and the last out cue to be offset.
So, basically, the recut option allows you to use previously created subtitles. The
subtitles were probably created for a video with a different timecode and now the user
wants to adapt them to the same video with a new timecode, without having to spot
the whole video again.
Offsetting is a bit different. If for some reason, during the spotting process, all or some
of the subtitles become unsynchronized, the user can move the selected subtitles
forward or backwards at the same time.

TEXT EDITING
DELETE EXTRA SPACES
To delete leading (start of row) or trailing (end of row) spaces, go to Subtitle menu -->
Run Fixes --> Select 'Leading and trailing spaces'.
You can also select to delete multiple spaces.
NARRATIVES
Narratives are subtitles that represent relevant textual information appearing onscreen,
as opposed to dialogue. There are two different types of narrative titles:
Principal photography narratives represent text that appears within the filmed
reality. For example: road signs, newspaper headlines, an address on an
envelope, and information displayed on a computer or TV screen
7
people, locations or time ("Quentin Tarantino, Director," "Tokyo, 1987" "Two
months later," etc.). They may also be used to translate non-English audio.
TAGS
Users may tag each subtitle. The tags are used for flagging narratives or giving technical
description to a subtitle. Those tags can be subsequently used to filter subtitles on
export (for example, export only Forced, or all but Forced) via tag filter in the export
dialog.

CAPTIONS
COPY/CUT SUBTITLES
The copy / cut dialog can be found under the "Subtitle" menu:
9
You can select the range to copy or cut by index range to copy to a new index:
Once you selected the source range and destination location just click on "COPY AND
PASTE" to keep the source rows or "CUT AND PASTE" to move the rows without keeping
them.
If you copy by index - you'll lose the timecodes to keep the project valid (you'll need to
time those new subtitles).
If you copy by time - the timecodes will update according to the destination time (it will
become the start time of the first subtitle in the range and all other timecodes will
update in relation to the difference with the previous start time).

Google Authenticator
Google Authenticator is our recommended method for two factor authentication. The
other available methods are SMS messages and Email messages. Both of them rely on
different factors like your phone reception or the speed you'll get the email message.
Using Google Authenticator is immediate, it's a program that shows you a 6 digit number
it calculates using the current time and a secret key you shared with it when you set it
up the first time. That way we can identify it's really you even if your phone is not
connected to the internet.
You can download Google Authenticator here: Android / iOS.
12
Once you have the program installed on your desired device click on your username at
the top right of the screen and select "Google Authenticator" for the setup wizard. Once
the setup is done, the next time you login you'll need to copy the code from the Google
Authenticator app to get access to your account.
VERIFICATION CODE
If two-factor authentication is enabled for your account, a security code will be sent to
your email address or mobile phone. If you don't get the code within a few minutes,
please check your spam folder. If it is not there either, please contact your project
coordinator.

HOW TO RESTORE A PROJECT BACKUP

You'll see a list of backups made for your project with the time of the backup.

When you restore a backup your current state is also backed-up to make sure you don't
