I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the Nursery 2 pupils should be able to do the
following with at least 80% of accuracy:
a. identify the one-by-one pattern and two-by-two pattern; and
b. draw the things that come next in each pattern.

B. Reference: Ladders to Learning Series: Mathematics (Second Edition)
pages 81-88
C. Materials: Visual aid and pictures.

C. Presentation

Today we are going to learn about the one-by-


one and two-by-two pattern.

But let’s define first what is a pattern.

Patterns are an arrangement of things.


Completing a pattern is just like completing a
puzzle.

Do you know how to complete a puzzle? Yes, teacher!

Have you tried already? Yes, teacher!

That’s to good to hear because today we are


going to complete puzzles following a pattern.

Are you ready? Yehey! Yes, teacher!

Let’s start with the one-by-one pattern.

Look at this row of crayons.

Orange and blue.


Children what color of crayons do we have

Very good!
They are arranged one by one every
How are they arranged? color.

Correct! The crayons are arranged one by one


for each color from left to right.

The first color is one orange crayon followed


by one blue crayon and then one orange
crayon again and blue crayon and so on.

Another. Look at this row of things. The bags Yes, Teacher.


and notebooks. It is also arranged in one-by-
one pattern, right?

One bag… One notebook… One


Alright! Can we say the name of the things in bag… One notebook…
each row one after the another from left to,
right?

But there is a missing. To complete the pattern,
what thing should come next to the bag?

Again, this is a one-by-one pattern. In which,


the things are arranged by one after another

Next, let’s go to the two-by-two pattern.

Look at this row of shapes.

A square and a triangle.

What shapes do we have in the picture?

Children what shapes do we have here? How They are arranged two by two for each

How are they arranged?

Correct! The shapes are arranged by two’s

The first shapes are two squares followed by


two triangles and then two squares again and
