This document provides teacher notes on creating dynamic trigonometric graphs using GeoGebra software. It instructs teachers to create graphs of y=asin(bx) and observe how changing the values of a and b affect the graph. Teachers are asked to have students summarize how the graphs change as a and b are increased or decreased. Students may then be assessed by submitting portfolios of trigonometric graphs with different values for a and b.

CHAPTER 5 TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

Dynamic Graphs

AIM

For students to be able to observe trigonometric graphs such as y = a sin bx and observe changes
in the graph as a and b change.

INTRODUCTION

Revise the basic trigonometric graphs y = sin x, y = cos x and y = tan x and their reciprocal
graphs y = cosec x, y = sec x and y = cot x.

METHOD

• Open GeoGebra (this is graphing software that can be downloaded from the internet).

• Click on the 10th button to the right on the top toolbar to open a slider, a.

• Click anywhere on the screen to open it.

• Change the increment to 1, click apply.

• Repeat this process for a new slider, b.

• Type y = a space sin (b space x) in the input window at the bottom of the screen and press
enter.

• Move slider b to 1 by right clicking and moving it manually.

• Right click slider a and click animate on to see the graph change as a changes.

• Now stop the animation by right clicking it and leave slider a on 1.

• Right click slider b and click animate on to see the effect on the graph when b changes
value.

• Ask the students to summarise these changes as a and b change in their notes.

• Save the file as trigsin.

CHAPTER 5 TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

Dynamic Graphs (Cont.)

• Follow these same steps to make a dynamic cosine graph.

• Ask students to summarise the trends as a and b change.

• Save the file as trigcos.

• Follow these same steps to make a dynamic tangent graph.

• Ask students to summarise the trends as a and b change.

• Save the file as trigtan.

ASSESSMENT

Students could be asked to submit a portfolio of trigonometric graphs such as y = 3 sin 2x,
y = 4 cos 3x and so on.
