(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper.
They must NOT start writing during this time)

This paper is divided into four sections – A, B, C and D.


Answer all questions.
Section A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each.
Section B consists of seven questions of two marks each.
Section C consists of nine questions of three marks each, and
Section D consists of three questions of five marks each.
Internal choices have been provided in two questions each in Section B,
Section C and Section D.
The intended marks for questions are given in brackets [ ].
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as and adjacent
to the rest of the answer.
Answers to sub parts of the same question must be given in one place only.
A list of useful physical constants is given at the end of this paper.
A simple scientific calculator without a programmable memory may be used for
calculations.

Answer all questions.


Question 1.

(B) Answer the following questions briefly and to the point. [7x1=7]
(i)A proton and an electron travelling along parallel paths enter a region of uniform
magnetic field, acting perpendicular to their paths. Which of them will move in a circular
path with higher frequency?
(ii)Name the electromagnetic radiations used for:
a) water purification and b) eye surgery.
(iii)Draw the impedance triangle and write the expression for impedance of a series LCR
circuit.
(iv)Four nuclei of an element undergo fusion to form a heavier nucleus, with release of
energy. Which of the two the parent or the daughter nucleus would have higher binding
energy per nucleon and why?

(v)Two electric bulbs P and Q have their resistances in the ratio of 1: 2. They are
connected in series across a battery. Find the ratio of the power dissipation in these
bulbs.
(vi)How does the mobility of electrons in a conductor change, if the potential difference
applied across the conductor is doubled, keeping the length and temperature of
conductor constant?
(vii) A converging lens of focal length 40 cm is kept in contact with a diverging lens of
focal length 30 cm. Find the focal length of the combination.

Section – B
Answer all questions. [2x8=16]
Question 2.
A transformer is used to step up an alternating emf of 200 V to 440 V. If the primary coil
has 1000 turns, calculate the number of turns in the secondary coil.

Question 3
If light of wavelength 412.5 nm is incident on each of the metals given below, which
ones will show photoelectric emission and why?

Question 4
Define the distance of closest approach. An a-particle of kinetic energy ‘K’ is bombarded
on a thin gold foil. The distance of the closest approach is ‘r’. What will be the distance
of closest approach for an a-particle of double the kinetic energy?

Question 5
Calculate the radius of curvature of a biconcave lens of refractive index 1.5, when it is
kept in a medium of refractive index 1.4, to have a power of -5D?

An equilateral glass prism has a refractive index 1.6 in air. Calculate the angle of
minimum deviation of the prism, when kept in a medium of refractive index 4√2 /5

Question 6
You are provided with 8 μF capacitors. Show with the help of a diagram how you will
arrange minimum number of them to get a resultant capacitance of 20 μF

Question 7
An electric dipole of dipole moment is placed in a uniform electric field with its
axis inclined to the field. Write an expression for the torque experienced by the dipole
in vector form. Show diagrammatically how the dipole should be kept in the electric field
so that the torque acting on it is:
(i) maximum
(ii) zero

Question 8
Calculate the shortest wavelength in the Balmer series of hydrogen atom. In which
region (infrared, visible, ultraviolet) of hydrogen spectrum does this wavelength lie?

Section – C
Answer all questions: [3x9=27]

Question 9.
Four-point charges Q, q, Q and q are placed at the corners of a square of side ‘a’ as
shown in the figure

Find the
(a) resultant electric force on a charge Q and
(b) potential energy of this system.
(OR)
(a)Three-point charges q, – 4q and 2q are placed at the vertices of an equilateral
triangle ABC of side ‘l’ as shown in the figure. Obtain the expression for the magnitude
of the resultant electric force acting on the charge q.

(b) Find out the amount of the work done to separate the charges at infinite distance.

Question 10.
(a) Find the value of the phase difference between the current and the voltage in the
series LCR circuit shown below. Which one leads in phase current or voltage?
(b) Without making any other change, find the value of the additional capacitor C1, to be
connected in parallel with capacitor C, such that circuit becomes a resonant circuit.

Question 11.
Using Kirchhoff’s rules, calculate the current through the 40 Ω and 20 Ω resistors in the
following circuit:

Question 12
Use Huygens’s principle to show how a plane wavelength propagates from a denser to
rarer medium. Hence verify Snell’s law of reflection.

A compound microscope consists of two convex lenses of focal length 2cm and 5cm. When
an object is kept at a distance of 2.1cm from the objective, a virtual and magnified image is
formed 25cm from the eye piece. Calculate the magnifying power of the microscope.

Question 13:
(a) In Young's double slit experiment, two slits are separated by 3mm distance and
illuminated by light of wavelength 480 nm. The screen is at 2m from the plane of
the slits. Calculate the separation between the 8th bright fringe and the 3rd dark fringe
observed with respect to central bright fringe.
(b) Write the expression for fringe width in Young’s double slit experiment.

Question 14
Write any two distinguishing features between conductors, semiconductors and
insulators on the basis of energy band diagrams.

Question 15
Given a uniform electric field E =5 x 103 N/C, find the flux of this held through a square
of 10 cm on a side whose plane is parallel to the YZ-plane. What would be the flux
through the same square if the plane makes an angle of 30° with the X-axis?

Question 16.
What is the effect on the interference fringes in Young’s double slit experiment when
(i) the width of the source slit is increased;
(ii) the monochromatic source is replaced by a source of white light.
(iii) Draw the intensity graph for interference with the labelled axes.

Question 17.
Draw the circuit representation of a full wave rectifier and a half wave rectifier. Also
show the proper comparison of the input and output waveform for each of them.

Section – D
Answer all questions. [3x5=15]
Question 18
(a) (i)What is meant by pair annihilation? Write a balanced equation for the same.
(ii)What is the value for the threshold energy in pair production.

(b)The energy levels of an atom of a certain element are shown in the given figure.
Which one of the transitions A, B, C, D or E will result in the emission of photons of
electromagnetic radiation of wavelength 618.75 nm? Support your answer with
mathematical calculations.

(a) Explain the processes of nuclear fission and nuclear fusion by using the plot of
binding energy per nucleon (BE/A) versus the mass number A.
(b) In a nuclear reactor, what is the function of the following. Also mention one material
used for each:
(i) The moderator
(ii) The control rods

(a) Draw a labelled ray diagram of an image formed by a refracting telescope with
Final image formed at infinity. Derive an expression for its magnifying power with
the final image at infinity.
(b) The figure below shows the positions of a point object O, two lenses, a plane
mirror and the final image I which coincides with the object. The focal length of
the convex lens is 20 cm. Calculate the focal length of the concave lens

(OR)
(a) A plane wave front of wavelength 6000A is incident upon a slit of 0.2mm width, which
enables Fraunhofer’s diffraction pattern to be obtained on a screen 2m away. What will be the
width of the central maxima in mm?

(b)A narrow beam of monochromatic light, PQ, is incident normally on one face of an
equiangular glass prism of refractive index 1.45. When the prism is immersed in a
certain liquid, the ray makes a grazing emergence along the other face (See figure). Find
the refractive index of this liquid

Question 20.
A transformer is a device that is used to transfer electric energy from one alternating-
current circuit to one or more circuits. It transfers electric energy either by increasing
(stepping up) or reducing (stepping down) the voltage.

(a) Draw a labelled diagram of a step-up transformer.


(b) What is the basic principle of a transformer?
(c)Obtain the ratio of secondary to primary voltage in terms of number of turns and
currents in the two coils.
(d) A power transmission line feeds input power at 2200 V to a step-down transformer
with its primary winding’s having 3000 turns. Find the number of turns in the secondary
to get the power output at 220 V.
