Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 5

This document contains a semi-detailed lesson plan in Science 5 about heat conductors and insulators. The objectives are to discuss why some materials are good conductors of heat and electricity. The content focuses on heat conductors and insulators. The learning resources include a video clip, pictures, charts, and worksheets. The 5E approach procedure engages students through a review activity and establishes the purpose. Students then explore concepts by watching a video and completing group tasks. New concepts are explained through a discussion. Formative assessment involves students completing a Venn diagram. Practical applications are found and generalizations are made. The lesson concludes by evaluating learning through multiple choice and classification activities.

A. Content Standard
Demonstrate how different objects interact with light and
sound, heat and electricity.

B. Performance Standard
Propose an unusual tool or device using electromagnet that is useful for homeschool or
community.

C. Learning Competency (MELCs)

Discuss why some materials are good conductors of heat and electricity.
(S5FE-IIIc-3)

Unpacked Competency:
1. Define heat conductors and insulators.
2. Give the importance of knowing the materials as heat conductors and insulators.
3. Classify materials as heat conductors and insulators.

Integration: English, Health, EPP

II. Content: HEAT CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS

III. Learning Resources:

A. References:
1. Teacher’s Guide Pages: MELCs in Science 5 page
2. Learner’s Materials Pages:
3. Textbook Pages:
4. Additional Materials from LR Portal:
B. Other Learning Resources: ppt, pictures, chart, task card, worksheet,
video clip - https://youtu.be/7VUBSDHFvy0?si=A-WxRr8NnXmp1mdj

IV. Procedure: 5 E’s APPROACH

ENGAGE:
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
Direction: Complete the statement below by providing the missing letters.

An object is said to be in m _ t _ _ n if it changes in p _ s _ _ _ on with respect to its

reference point.
Answer: motion position

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

“Do all materials allow heat to transfer to an object easily?”

EXPLORE:
C. Presenting examples/Instances of the new lesson
 The pupils will watch the video clip about heat conductors and insulators.
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

 The pupils will be grouped into 3 and will be given Task Card.
Group Task: Differentiated Activities
Task Card 1: “Where Do I Belong?”
Direction: Cut the pictures of Kitchen Tools & Utensils then paste the pictures
according to the materials their made up.

Metal Plastic Wood

Task Card 2: “Know Your Worth!”

Direction: Complete the concept web by filling in the circles with examples of
conductors that you see in the classroom.

Knowing about materials as heat _____________

conductors and heat _____________
insulatorswill
help us in _________________ choosing
the materials to be used in _________________ our building
houses and ______________
cookingour meals.

Task Card 3: “Can You Tell?”

Direction: Answer the questions below:

 What do you call the materials that heat can easily pass through?
conductors
__________________
 What do you call the materials that heat cannot easily pass through?
insulators
__________________

 They will do their task according to the standards in doing group activity.
 The teacher will move around to monitor and supervise them.
 Presentation of outputs per group.
 Clarification of any misconceptions.

EXPLAIN:
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2
 Discussion:
What are the materials of the spoons used in the experiment?
 The materials of the spoons used in the experiment are metal, plastic, and wood.

In which spoon (metal spoon or plastic spoon or wooden spoon) the butter melted fast?
Why?
 The butter melted in metal spoon.
 Because the heat from the hot water was allowed to easily pass through the
metal spoon so it caused the butter to melt.

What do we call the material that allow heat to easily pass through?
 The material that allows heat to pass through easily is called heat conductor.
Therefore, metal is a heat conductor.
 Aside from metal, there are other materials that conducts heat such as gold, silver,
iron, steel, aluminum, and copper.

How about the butter in wood and plastic spoons, did it melt like the butter in metal
spoon? Why?
 The butter in wood and plastic spoons did not melt.
 Because the heat from the hot water was not allowed to easily pass through wood
and plastic spoons so it does not cause the butter to melt.

What do we call these materials that do not allow heat to easily pass through?
 The material that does not allow heat to pass through easily is called heat
insulator. Therefore, wood and plastic are heat insulator.
 Aside from wood and plastic, there are other materials that insulates heat such as
rubber, cotton, nylon, glass, cement, and leather.

F. Developing mastery (leads to Formative Assessment)

Individual Task:
Direction: Copy and complete the Venn Diagram below about Heat Conductors and Insulators
by writing the letter of the correct answer in each box.

A. Materials that prevent heat to transfer easily to an object.

B. Metal, silver. copper, gold, aluminum, and steel.
C. Heat conductors and insulators are both useful to humans.
D. Rubber, glass, wood, plastic, cotton, and cement.
E. Materials that allow heat to transfer easily to an object.

ELABORATE:
G. Finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living
 How do conductors and insulators help us in our daily activities?
We use conductors such aluminum pots and pans in cooking our meals. While
insulators such as umbrella and slippers protect us and keeps us safe from heat that the
sun and pavement may transfer to our body and feet.

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

Direction: Match the statement in Column A to the words being described in column B by
writing the letter of your selected answer.

COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. Materials that prevent heat to a. Conductors
transfer easily to an object.
2. Materials that allow heat to b. Insulator
transfer easily to an object.

EVALUATION:
I. Evaluating learning
A. Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it in your answer sheet.

1. Materials through which heat pass easily are called ______________.

a. insulators b. conductors c. nonconductor d. metallic

2. Which of the following is a benefit from heat conductor materials?

a. It helps us drive safely. c. It gives electricity.

b. It helps us in cooking foods. d. It burns us.

3. Which of the following is a benefit from heat insulator materials?

a. It helps us cooking foods. c. It protects us from heat.

b. It gives us heat. d. It burns us.

4. Materials that do not easily transmit heat are called _________________.

a. conductor b. wire c. iron d. insulator
