Methods of

Collecting Data
Prepared by: Mr. Jerry Mae A. Ranes
1. INTERVIEW METHOD
a. direct method – the researcher personally interviews the respondent.
b. indirect method – the researcher use telephone, webcam, or cellphone
to interview.
2. QUESTIONNAIRE METHOD
A questionnaire is a list of well-planned questions written on paper
which can be either personally administered or mailed by the researcher.
a. guided-response
b. recall-type
c. dichotomous type
d. multiple-choice type
e. multiple-response
f. rating scale type
3. EMPIRICAL OBSERVATION METHOD
It is obtaining data through seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and
touching.
a. participant
b. non-participant
4. TEST METHOD
It is widely used in psychological research and psychiatry.
5. REGISTRATION METHOD
• The mechanical devices that can be used for social and educational
research in data gathering.
• Respondents provide information in compliance with certain laws,
policies, or standard practices (e.g.: marriage contract, birth
certificate, cedula).
WAYS TO PRESENT
DATA
presentation
Presentation is the process of organizing data into logical,
sequential, and meaningful categories and classifications to make
them amenable to study and interpretation.
THREE (3) WAYS TO PRESENT DATA
• tabular
• graphical
• textual
TABULAR PRESENTATION
A systematic arrangement of related idea in which classes of
numerical facts or data are given each row and their subclasses
are given each a column in order to present the relationships of
the sets or numerical facts or data in a definite, compact, and
understandable form.

GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION
A chart representing the quantitative variations or changes of
variables in pictorial or diagrammatic form.
Kinds of graphs/charts
• Circle/Pie Graph – also known as the pie chart that shows the
relationships of the parts of the whole. The circle is considered
with 100% and the categories occupied is represented with
that specific percentage like 15%, 56%, etc.

Kinds of graphs/charts
• Line Graphs –is used to display the continuous data and it is
useful for predicting future events over time.
Kinds of graphs/charts
• Bar Graphs – is used to display the category of data and it
compares the data using solid bars to represent the discrete
quantities.
Kinds of graphs/charts
• Histograms – the graph that uses bars to represent the
frequency of numerical data that are organized into intervals.
Since all the intervals are equal and continuous, all the bars
have the same width.
Kinds of graphs/charts
• Picture Graph or Pictograph - is a graph used to display
information that uses images or symbols to represent data.
Each image or symbol represents a certain number of things.
Kinds of graphs/charts
• Map Chart or Cartogram – simply put, a cartogram is a map.
But a cartogram is a unique type of map because it combines
statistical information with geographic location.

TEXTUAL PRESENTATION
Textual presentation of data incorporates important figures in a paragraph
of text. In textual presentation we insert important data figures or
summary measures within the paragraph of text to support our conclusions
and answers each problem. At the same time we can highlight all the
noteworthy figures in understanding the population we are studying.
