MYP Year: 5 Subject: Chemistry Unit: Electrochemistry Global Context: Orientation in Space and Time Revision Sheet-2

This document provides a revision sheet on the topic of electrochemistry for a Year 5 chemistry unit. It contains questions about the extraction of aluminium through electrolysis, electrolysis of copper sulfate solutions, the reactivity series of metals including tin, and why zinc plating prevents rusting but tin plating does not.

Name ……………………………………………………………………. Date ……………

Content:

1. Redox reactions
2. Reactivity series of metals
3. Electrolysis
4. Applications of electrolysis- Extraction of metal

Criterion A: Knowing and understanding

1 Aluminium is extracted by the electrolysis of a molten mixture that contains alumina, which is
aluminium oxide, Al2O3.

(a) The ore of aluminium is bauxite. This contains alumina, which is amphoteric, and
iron(III) oxide, which is basic. The ore is heated with aqueous sodium hydroxide.

(c) The ions that are involved in the electrolysis are Al3+ and O2-.

(i) Write an equation for the reaction at the cathode.

Cathode – reduction – cations

4Al3+ + 12e-  4Al

(ii) Explain how carbon dioxide is formed at the anode.

Anode – oxidation – anion

6O2-  12e- + 6O2

(d) Aluminium reacts very slowly with aqueous copper(II) sulphate.

2Al(s) + 3CuSO4(aq) Al2(SO4)3(aq) + 3Cu(s)

(iii) Which of the two metals has the greater tendency to form ions?

Aluminium cz more reactive

(iv) Describe what you would see when this reaction occurs.
Alumnium is displacing copper

(v) Explain why aluminium reacts so slowly.

2. a) Aqueous copper (II) sulphate solution can be electrolysed using carbon electrodes.
The ions present in the solution are as follows.

2+ 2– +
Cu (aq),
– SO4 H(aq), OH_ (aq),

(i) Write an ionic equation for the reaction at the negative electrode (cathode).[1]

2 Cu2+ + 4e-  2 Cu

(ii) A colourless gas was given off at the positive electrode (anode) and the
solution changes from blue to colourless. Explain these observations. [2]
4 OH -  2 H2O + 4e- + O2

b) Aqueous copper(II) sulphate can be electrolysed using copper electrodes. The

reaction at the negative electrode is the same but the positive electrode becomes smaller
and the solution remains blue.

(c )Write a word equation for the reaction at the positive electrode.

Anode – oxidising – anion

Cu  Cu2+ + 2e-

(d) Explain why the colour of the solution does not change.

3. Tin is an element in Group IV.

(a) The position of tin in the reactivity series is:

Zinc , Iron ,tin, Copper.

For each of the following, decide if a reaction would occur. If there is a reaction, complete

the equation, otherwise write ‘no reaction’.

Cu + Sn2+ === ............no reaction..............................

Fe + Sn2+ =======....................Fe 2+ + Sn......................

Sn + Zn2+ == ................no reaction..........................

(b) Aqueous tin(II) sulphate is electrolysed using carbon electrodes. This electrolysis is similar to
that of aqueous copper(II) sulphate using carbon electrodes.

(i) What is the product at the negative electrode (cathode)?

Sn2+ + 2e-  Sn

be plated with tin or zinc to prevent rusting. When the zinc layer is damaged exposing the
underlying steel, it does not rust, but when the tin layer is broken the steel rusts. Explain.
