SUMMARY
LiFi technology is emerging an idea of data transmission. It is very fast and highly directional
and fully function able technology very similar to that of Wi-Fi.
The term was coined by Prof Harald Haas in a TED Global talk. The distinct feature of this
technology is that it replaces the RF spectrum with visible spectrum thereby forming visible
light communication.
It is optical wireless communication technology and can carry more information with higher
rates.
The property of semiconductor to switch transmissions at high rates is used for this
technology.
Use of LED sources provide with lesser energy consumptions and makes it more useful in
sensitive areas such as hospitals, refineries etc.

Existing issues regarding transmissions:
Capacity
In current scenario, Electromagnetic waves in the radio frequencies are used for data
transmissions. They’re very expensive, limited and only a certain range of frequency
is available for transmission.
It causes various ecological problems too. The radiations can affect health of animals
and birds.
The LIFI technology requires only led light sources which is already existing and
requires no additional investments.
Also light sources don’t cause any health problems.
Efficiency
Above 1.4 million base stations and over 4 billion cell phones are present in the world
now. A very large amount of energy is consumed by the stations during the working.
Most of the energy is used to cool the base stations. Overall efficiency of base stations
is just above 5% only.
Availability
Data transfers are not available everywhere, such as flights, hospitals, and other
places where we used to switch off our phones.
Security.
The Radio frequency is easier to intercept as they can penetrate through walls. Some
person on the next room could easily access the data. but in LiFi as signals doesn’t
penetrate through walls and can be controlled by manually, it is very secure.
theyre more secure and data loss is prevented
2
Data is fed into an LED light bulb which is fitted with signal processing technology.
The LED bulb pulses the data at a high non-visible rate to the photodetector. The pulses are
interpreted by the receiver into an electrical signal, which is then converted back to binary
data which is consumed.
Multiple users can access data using a single LED light or move from one LED light to
another without affecting their access as the sources form a network.

Advantages
Gamma Rays, X rays and Ultra violet rays can’t be used for data transmission since they
might cause health problems due to exposure.
IR waves are used for low power transmissions.
If we consider the visible region and radio waves, visible spectra is 10,000 times wider than
radio waves, doubtless it has higher data transmission capacity, The 1.4 million pre existing
base stations could be replaced by the LED light sources.
Intensity of light emitted from an LED can be modulated at very high speeds and can be
switched on and off at high speeds.
By connecting a microchip into the illuminating source, the device can be made into a source
of data and light.
IR Remote control
IR source used can transmit low speed data stream of about 10,000 bits per second.
LED Remote control
Thousands of data streams at higher speeds can be transmitted in short interval of time, by
using spatial modulation.
Spatial modulation (Spatial Modulation (SM) is a recently proposed approach to multiple-
input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. It aims to increase the data rate of a system without
increasing the bandwidth requirements)

CONCLUSIONS
Li-Fi technology will in future enable faster, more reliable internet connections, even when
the demand for data usage has outgrown the available supply from existing technologies such
as 4G, LTE and Wi-Fi. It will not replace these technologies, but will work seamlessly
alongside them.
Using light to deliver wireless internet will also allow connectivity in environments that do
not currently readily support Wi-Fi, such as aircraft cabins, hospitals and hazardous
environments.
Light is already used for data transmission in fibre-optic cables and for point to point links,
but Li-Fi is a special and novel combination of technologies that allow it to be universally
adopted for mobile ultra high speed internet communications.
"In the future you will not only have 14 billion (LED) light bulbs, you may also have 14
billion Li-Fi's deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener, and even brighter future,"
Haas said at the TED talk introducing the technology.
