Li-Fi is a visible light communication technology that provides wireless internet access using LED light bulbs. It can transmit data at speeds over 1 Gbps, much faster than traditional Wi-Fi. Li-Fi uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that can be flickered on and off at extremely high speeds, transmitting data using variations in light intensity. A photodetector converts light signals into electrical signals to transmit data to devices. Li-Fi offers more bandwidth than Wi-Fi, highly secure transmission, and is less expensive. Potential applications include use in airplanes, hospitals, and traffic control systems. However, Li-Fi requires line-of-sight and cannot transmit through walls.

History of Li-Fi:
 This technology truly began in 1980’s.

 Professor Harald Haas from the

University of Edinburgh ,Began his Fig-2: Professor Harald Haas
research in this field in 2004.

 In 2011 he coined the term Li-Fi in TED

global talk .

6
What is Li-Fi?
•  Wireless communication
technology similar to Wi-Fi

• Visible light communication

• Bidirectional

• High-speed

Fig-1: Introduction of Li-Fi

7
Basic Working principle:

 . If the LED is on, a digital 1 is transmitted. If the LED is

off, a digital 0 is transmitted.
 There will be a photo detector registers a binary one when
the LED is on and a binary zero if the LED is off to build up
a message.

8
Why Li fi ?
Previously we could send only one data stream at a time.
But with this technology we can transmit thousand of data
stream in parallel with faster rate at a time. Its data
transmission rate is over 1 Gbps .( last achieved 10 Gbps )

For single data stream:

For multiple data stream:

9
Features of Li-Fi Technology:
 uses visible light

 high speed technology

 100 times faster transmission than Wi-Fi.

10
Working procedure:
 Data coming from a server or internet is transmitted
by modulating the light intensity in LED bulb.

 The signal is received by a photosensitive detector

and converted into electrical form.

 This electrical signal is then transmitted to laptop or

any devices.

Advantages of Li-Fi:
 Speed

 Bandwidth

 Security

 Availability

14
Applications:
 Airlines and Aviations  Health technologies

 Under water communications  Traffic control

 Super-fast wireless internet  The military

15
Examples:

Fig-5: Some applications of Li-Fi [6].

16
Limitations:
 Light can’t pass through walls and there will be no
Li-Fi connection.

 It can’t be achieved without any light source.

 Requires Line of Sight.

 Even at day light we need to keep the lights on.

17
Future Work in Li-Fi:

 Make Li-Fi to work in low or dim light sources.

 Overcoming the line of sight problem.

 Low cost modulation.

18
OVERVIEW:

 It is a visible light based wireless communication.

 Very efficient alternative to radio based wireless.
 Has a bright chance to replace the traditional Wi-Fi.
 This concept promises to solve issues such as the
shortage of radio-frequency bandwidth and boot out
the disadvantages of Wi-Fi.
