CHAPTER 5

DIFFERENTIATION

1
At the end of this chapter, student should able to:
1. Find derivatives using First Principle
2. Apply the differentiation rule for appropriate
functions
3. Obtain higher derivatives of a function

2
Outline
• The Secant Line and the Tangent Line
• First Principle of Differentiation
• Rules of Differentiation
• Higher Order Derivative

3
The Secant Line and the Tangent Line

4
5
A secant line is a straight line joining two points on
a function.

A tangent line is the line that touches one point only

on the curve y=f(x).

In the given graph, we have the function f(x) where

MN is a secant line and PQ is he tangent line.

Differentiation for Addition and Subtraction

• Under addition and subtraction of two or more

terms/functions, we can differentiate the terms
separately.

APPLICATION OF
DIFFERENTIATION
At the end of this chapter, student should able
to:
1. determine the critical point(s) and inflection
point(s) of a function
2. solve optimization problems

Example 2
Relative
Extremum
A relative extremum refers to a relative maximum or
a relative minimum. Given that the point is a
critical/stationary point for function Then, there are
two tests that can be used to determine relative
extremum for critical point, that is, the FIRST
DERIVATIVE TEST and the SECOND DERIVATIVE
TEST.
First Derivative Test
Then the first derivative test on the critical point (c,f(c)) is summarized as
follows.
Second Derivative Test
