Photos by June Famur Jr. from Pexels showcases the Tangyan Festival, which is held during the 3 rd week
of May.
Every year, during the 3rd week of May, Igbaras, Iloilo comes to life with an eventful
festival. It's called the Tangyan Festival, and it celebrates the culture and history of the Tangyan
tribe.
As shown in the photos taken by June Femur from Pexels, the Tangyan Festival brings
the city to life with street dance and competitions among the many tribes. Dancers wear beautiful
and colorful costumes with feathers as they dance to traditional drumbeats. The dances use
movements and props to show how humans can hurt the environment and teach about taking care
of nature.
The festival also shares the story of the Tangyan River's name. It is named after Orang
Tangayan, whose daughter married a local chief long ago. The river has been important for a
long time, uniting the town in recognizing the role of the river in their lives' past, present and in
the future.
The Tangyan Festival is a special time to celebrate the important culture and traditions of
Igbaras town. It is also a way to say thank you to the Tangyan River. The river gives the people a
way to live, work and grow their businesses. After all the fun festival activities, people are
reminded how important the Tangyan River is to their community. It gives life and needs to be
protected for people in the future too. The dances, music and events help everyone appreciate the
river and their culture.
