Practice Problems Set #7
(Continuity, differentiability and analyticity)

1. Specify whether the following sets are open, closed, connected, bounded, domain and region.
(a) {z : |z| < 1}. (b) {z : 2 ≤ |z − 3| < 6}. (c) {z = x + iy : x < 1 or x > 5}.
(d) {z : |z| < 1 or |z − 2| < 1}.
2. Consider the following functions:

x3 (1 + i) − y 3 (1 − i) p
(a) f (z) = , (z ̸= 0), f (0) = 0, (b) f (z) = |xy|, ∀z ∈ C.
x2 + y 2
Show that both the above two functions are continuous and satisfy CR equations at (0, 0) but are
not differentiable there.
3. Let f (z) = z 3 . For z1 = 1 and z2 = i, show that there do not exist any point c on the line y = 1 − x
joining z1 and z2 such that
f (z1 ) − f (z2 )
= f ′ (c).
z1 − z2
Note. Above example implies that Mean value theorem of real calculus does not extend to functions
of complex variable.
w−z
4. For a fixed w in the unit disk D = {z : |z| < 1}, define the function f (z) = . Show that
1 − w̄z
(a) f is a map from D to D and is differentiable at every point of D.
(b) f (0) = w and f (w) = 0, i.e., f interchanges 0 and w.
(c) |f (z)| = 1 if |z| = 1.
(d) f : D → D is bijective.
5. Let f (z) = u + iv be an analytic function defined in a domain D. Show that f (z) must be constant
if one of the following statements is true for all z ∈ D.

(a) f (z) is real-valued. (b) f (z) is analytic. (c) |f (z)| is constant. (d) Argf (z) is constant.
6. If f (z) is an analytic function in an open set Ω, prove that

∂f 1 ∂f ∂f ′ 1 ∂f ∂f
= +i = 0, and f (z) = −i .
∂ z̄ 2 ∂x ∂y 2 ∂x ∂y

∂f
Note. Relation = 0 known as the complex form of CR equations. It shows that every analytic
∂ z̄
function is independent of z̄.
7. Suppose that g : {z : |z| < 1} ∪ {z : |z − 4| < 1} → C is an analytic function with zero derivative.
Is g necessarily a constant function?

8. Show that the following functions u(x, y) are harmonic functions. Determine their harmonic con-
jugate and find the corresponding analytic functions f (z) in terms of z.
x+y
(a) u = e−x (x sin y − y cos y) (b) u = cos x cosh y (c) u = .
x2 + y 2

9. If f (z) = u + iv is an analytic function of z = x + iy and u − v = ex (cos y − sin y), find f (z) in

terms of z.
