Questions 1.1 and 1.2 refer to a 2.00 kg block placed carefully as

2 kg
to be stationary on a 40° slope, as shown. The coefficients of
friction for the block and slope are s = 0.900 and k = 0.800.
40°
1.1 The frictional force acting on the block is
A 12.0 N B 12.6 N C 13.5 N D 15.0 N E 15.6 N

1.2 If the block is given a small push down the slope, it will…
A accelerate down the slope
B come to rest as soon as the pushing stops
C continue to slide a short distance before stopping
D continue to slide down the slope at constant speed

1.3 A roller-coaster car has a mass of 500 kg when fully

loaded with passengers. At the bottom of a circular dip
of radius 40 m (as shown in the figure) the car has a
speed of 16 m/s. What is the magnitude of the force of
the track on the car at the bottom of the dip?
A 3.2 kN
B 8.1 kN
C 4.9 kN
D 1.7 kN
E 5.3 kN

3
1.4 A 100 g block of copper and a 100 g block of aluminium
are connected by a massless string passing over two
massless, frictionless pulleys, as shown. The two blocks
balance exactly, since they have the same mass.
If the whole system is now submerged in water,
Cu Al
A nothing will change
B both blocks will rise
C the aluminium block will fall, the copper block will rise
D the copper block will fall, the aluminium block will rise
E the copper block will stay the same height but the aluminium block will rise

1.5 A 1.0 kg object moving at 10.0 m/s collides with and sticks to a 9.0 kg object initially at
rest. Determine the kinetic energy lost by the system as a result of this collision.
A 20 J B 15 J C 30 J D 45 J E 55 J

1.6 A vector, B when added to the vector C  3iˆ  4 ˆj yields a resultant vector which is in the
positive y direction and has a magnitude equal to that of C . What is the magnitude of B ?
A 3.2 B 6.3 C 9.5 D 18 E 5

1.7 A 5 g coin is dropped from a 300 m building. If it reaches a terminal velocity of 45 m/s,
and the rest of the energy is converted to heating the coin, what is the change in
temperature (in C) of the coin? (The specific heat of copper is 387 J/kgC.)
A 9 B 2 C 5 D 21 E 0.5

Section B

Answer ALL questions in this section.

Question 2 (5 marks)
2.1

A student drives a scooter along a straight road as described by the velocity–time graph shown in
the figure below. The scooter starts from the position x = 0 m at t = 0 s.
2.1 Determine the acceleration of the scooter at t = 7 s. (2)
2.2 Find the position of the scooter at t = 9 s. (3)

Question 3 (5 marks)
Three ice cubes are used to cool water which is initially at 20°C. The mass of the water is
m = 0.25 kg. The ice is at 0 °C and each ice cube has a mass of 6.0 g. Assume that the water is kept
in a foam container so that heat loss can be ignored. Find the final temperature of the water when all
the ice has melted.

Question 4 (10 marks)

An archer shoots an arrow with a velocity of 45.0 m/s at an angle of 50.0° to the horizontal
ground of the archery range. An assistant standing 150 m away in the direction of the
arrow’s flight throws a ball straight up into the air at the right time and speed for it to be hit
by the arrow.

4.1 Determine the minimum initial speed with which the ball must be thrown up in
order for the arrow to hit the ball. (8)
4.2 How long after the arrow’s launch should the ball should be launched (at this
same minimum speed) in order for the arrow to hit it? (2)

Question 5 (10 marks) 2.3

A 20.0 kg block on a 40° incline is connected to a 30.0 kg M = 2 kg

block by a light inextensible string passing over a frictionless
pulley. For the block on the slope s = 0.600 and k = 0.550.
The pulley is a solid disk with radius R = 7.50 cm and mass 20 kg
30 kg
M = 2.00 kg. The 30.0 kg block is connected to a spring of
negligible mass and a force constant of 250 N/m, as shown at
the moment when the spring is unstretched. The 20.0 kg 40° 20.0 cm
block is now pulled 20.0 cm down the incline (so that the
30.0 kg block is 40.0 cm above the floor) before being released from rest.
Determine the speed of each of the blocks when the 30.0 kg block is 20.0 cm above the
floor, i.e. when the spring is once again unstretched. (10)

Question 6 (10 marks) 2.4

The figure below shows a section of a long tube that narrows near its open end to a diameter of
1.5 mm. The tube is angled upward so that it makes an angle of  = 30° to the horizontal. Water
flows out of the open end at 1.5  10-5 m3/s . What is the gauge pressure at point P, where the
diameter is 3.5 mm?
(Recall that the gauge pressure is the absolute pressure minus atmospheric pressure.)
