1.HVAC introduction
HVAC ： heating , Ventilation and air conditioning. HVAC system include a range
from the simplest hand-stoked stove, used for comfort heating, to the extremely
relieble total air-conditioning systems found in submarines and space shuttles.
In 1851 , Dr John Gorrie was granted US patent 8080 for a refrigeration machines,
by the 1880s,Referigeration became available for industrial purpose of freezing
meat. However, in 1902, there was facilities to keep building cool for comfort that
was one of the frist comfort cooling systems in New york stock exchange, which was
called air conditioning. By now the term “Air conditioning ” has gradually changed,
from meaning just cooling, to total control of :
 Temperature
 Moisture in the air (humidity)
 Supply of outside air for ventilation
 Filtration of airborne particles
 Air movement in the occupied space

2.Scope of modern HVAC


Modern air condition is critical to almost every facet of advancing human activity.
The modern HVAC include :indoor air quality , Greenhouse gas emissions and energy
conservation.

3.Introduction to Air-conditioning process


As mentioned earlier, the term “air conditioning” , when properly used, now means
the total control of termperature, moisture in the air/ humidity , supply of outside
air for ventilation , filtration of the airborne particles and air movement in the
occupied space. There are seven main process required to achieved full air
conditioning and they are listed and explained below :

The requirements and importance of the seven processes varies, in a climate that
stays warm all year, heating may not be required at all. Conversely, in a cold
climate the periods of heat in the summer may be so infrequent as to make cooling
unnecessary. In a dry desert climate, dehumidification may be redundant, and in a
hot , humid climate dehumidificacation may be the most important design aspect of
the air-conditioning system.

4.HVAC system analysis and selection


The design engineer is responsible for considering various systems and equipment
and recommending on or more system options that will meet the project goals and
preform per the design intent. It is imperative that the design engineer and owner
collaborate to identify and prioritize criteria associated with the design goals, in
additions,if the project include preconstruction services, the designer, owner, and
operator should consult with a builder to take advantage of a constructability
analysis as well as the consideration of value engineered options. Occupant
comfort, process heating, space heating, cooling and ventilation criteria must be
considered when selecting the optimum systems,as well as the following:
