Study Note - Geometry Quadrilaterals

Geometry Quadrilaterals

QUADRILATERALS

▪ Any four-sided closed figure is called a quadrilateral

▪ Sum of angles of a quadrilateral = 360 degrees

▪ The area of any quadrilateral can be calculated using formula. Area = ½ 𝑑1 𝑑2 where

𝑑1 and 𝑑2 are the diagonals of the quadrilateral.

▪ Rectangle, square, trapezium, rhombus, parallelogram are all different types of

quadrilaterals.

▪ A quadrilateral inscribed in a circle is called as a cyclic quadrilateral. Opposite angles of

a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary.

∠B + ∠D = 1800

∠A + ∠C = 1800

POLYGON

Any closed figure with three or more than three sides is called a polygon. Polygons are

generally divided into 2 types

Study Note - Geometry Quadrilaterals

• Convex polygon

• Concave polygon

A polygon with all interior angles less than 1800 is a convex polygon.

A regular polygon is a convex polygon with all sides and all angles are equal

A polygon which has at least one interior angle measure greater than 1800 is called a concave

polygon.

Polygons are named based on number of sides they have as follows

No. of sides Name of polygon

3 Triangle
4 Quadrilateral
5 Pentagon
6 Hexagon
7 Heptagon
8 Octagon
9 Nonagon
10 Decagon

Note:

➢ Sum of interior angles of a convex polygon is equal to (2n – 4) right angles. Here n

represents the number of sides of the polygon

➢ In a regular polygon with n sides. Each interior angle of the polygon.

(2𝑛−4)
I= x 900 and each exterior angle = 3600 /n
𝑛
𝑛(𝑛−3)
➢ A convex polygon with n sides has diagonals. (A diagonal of a polygon is defined
2

as any line joining any two non-adjacent vertices of a polygon).
