CFPS Q & A 3-15-2024 With New FPH
CFPS Q & A 3-15-2024 With New FPH
1. I've already applied for the certification program and have been preparing for the exam. Now that the program is
changing, how will this affect my eligibility and timeline for taking the exam?
We understand your concerns regarding the recent changes to the CFPS certification program. Rest assured, if you
have already applied for the program and are currently in the process of preparing for the exam, you are still eligible
to take the exam under the current exam blueprint. However, it's important to note that with the launch of the new
exam based on the updated blueprint in June 2024, the current exam and blueprint will be retired, and candidates
will only have the option to take the new exam based on the updated blueprint.
If you are within the one-year timeframe from your application acceptance date, you will still have the opportunity to
take the exam before the launch of the new exam in June. We recommend that you continue your preparation using
materials aligned with the existing exam blueprint and take the exam prior to the June launch. However, you will still
be eligible to take the CFPS exam after the new blueprint and exam launch so long as it is within the one-year
window.
2. Will my previous certification still be valid after the new exam launches?
Yes, your CFPS certification will still be valid even though the exam blueprint has changed. NFPA reviews its
certification programs every three years to ensure that the certification blueprint and exam align with the role that
professionals are performing in the field.
3. I previously failed the exam and I am preparing to retake it right now. Can I take the old exam before it is retired?
Yes, you can retake the exam any day before the new exam launches. Once the new exam launches, candidates
will only have the option to take the new exam based on the updated blueprint. The old exam will be retired and
unavailable for testing after the new version is available.
4. Will there be any overlap in content between the old and new exams?
While there is overlap in foundational concepts, the content and structure of the new exam will be based on the
updated blueprint, which includes some new topics or changes to existing ones. It's essential for candidates to
review the updated exam blueprint thoroughly to ensure preparedness for the new exam. The new blueprint is
posted on the CFPS page of the website.
5. Can I use study materials or resources (like the Fire Protection Handbook) designed for the old exam to prepare for
the new one?
It's recommended that candidates primarily use study materials and resources aligned with the updated exam
blueprint to ensure relevance and accuracy of content. In the case of the updated CFPS exam, we recommend that
you reference the 21st edition of the Fire Protection Handbook. However, some foundational materials may still be
useful as supplementary resources.

6. Will there be any changes in exam format or question types with the launch of the new exam?
We have not made any changes to the length of the exam, number of questions, or type of questions that you will
see on the CFPS exam. The CFPS exam is a three (3) hour, open-book examination, containing 100 multiple-
choice questions.
7. How can I access study materials or resources for the new exam?
The 21st edition of the Fire Protection Handbook is currently available on the NFPA website. We are also launching
a CFPS learning path designed to help candidates prepare to take the exam, and that is scheduled to launch in
May 2024.
8. Will there be any changes in the registration processes for the new exam?
Candidates will still be able to apply for the CFPS exam in our Certification Management System. Candidates can
take the exam at any one of the hundreds of Prometric computer-based testing sites in the US and around the
globe, as well as in the online remote proctored environment.
9. Can I retake the old exam after the new one launches if I don't pass it on my first attempt?
After the new exam launches, the old version will be retired and unavailable. If you are eligible to retake the CFPS
exam after the new exam launches, even if you took the previous exam, you will have to take the updated CFPS
exam.
