Title

“Disability need not be an obstacle to success,” is a

quote said by Stephen Hawking, an English
theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who,
at the time of his death, was the Director of
Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology
at the University of Cambridge.
It was the first time; I recently attended the 21st Cavin
Kare Ability Awards for Achievers with Disabilities.
It was an eye-opening experience to see all the
nominees/winners, share their experiences and
how different were their struggles from our own.
Many of the winners had muscular dystrophy,
which is a group of more than 30 genetic diseases,
that cause progressive weakness and degeneration
of skeletal muscles used during voluntary
movement of our body. They couldn’t do the most
basic of tasks on their own. The one who inspired
me the most was Joyal Biju, a 16-year-old boy with
muscular dystrophy who is the youngest mouth
painter in the world. Their amazing achievements
despite their disability touched me to the core. At
that very moment, I realized that disabled people
have so much potential and are so inspiring; we
can learn so much from them. They don’t let their
disability define them and still aim for the best.
Vidya Kumari was another lady who won a
Mastery award. Apart from working as a delivery
partner with Swiggy she also is a national-level
table tennis player who aims to win a gold medal
for the country in the Paralympics. She wasn’t born
disabled; a spinal cord injury during an accident
left the lower part of her body paralyzed. When a
person with so many challenges can get past all
that and achieve so many great things, why can't
we? They are an inspiration for our entire
generation and their way of life proves “Disability
need not be an obstacle to success.” including
Stephen Hawking who has lived his life with
muscular dystrophy and has been a champion for
many.
