ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

0
I Would like to thank my teacher for working hand in hand with us
and explaining the project requirements to us .
I would also like to thank my mother and father for giving me the
money I need to use as capital.
I would like to thank the schools administrative department for
allowing us to sell items within the school premises for capital
creation for our projects.
Lastly I would like than my class for the outstanding team work
which lead to the completion of the development studies project.

INTRODUCTION
This project was conducted by the Saint Joseph’s College
Development studies student’s class of 2024. The school students and
working staff realised that the school was very untidy and hazardous
to all of us within the school thus we decide to engage in an
environmental awareness campaign activists.
For the campaign are as follows removal of weeds, cleaning the
surrounding and selling items to buy dustbin for stint josephs college.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Theoretical Background
History of Saint Joseph’s College
Founded in 1928 by the Catholic Church, St. Joseph's College aims to
provide education for Batswana children. As a government-
aided mission school, its funding is provided by the government of

Letlotlo Mazongo
Botswana, while ownership and management fall under the Roman
Catholic Diocese of Gaborone.

History of Botswana’s environmental management

The world is experiencing global worming because of the use of
fossil fuels thus unites nations have agreed to reduce greenhouse
gas emission by utilizing renewable source of energy which are not
harmful to the environment. Botswana is a land locked country
with a small population of 2,5 million which relies on the truism
and diamond mining sectors of the economy there to conserve our
resources such as wildlife in the tourism sector the government has
set laws to reduce hunting of game and barn hunting of endangered
animals. This is because the countries grand domestic product
comes from tourism.

GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND
This project was done in Gaborone the capital city of Botswana ,
which is located is in the southern African continent.

DEFINTION OF TERMS

 Awareness means knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.

 Environment means the surroundings or conditions in which a
person, animal, or plant lives or operates in.
 Environmental management means the practice of organizing
human activities in order to limit their impact on the natural
environment.

RATIONALE

Letlotlo Mazongo
Rationale is defined as statements which clearly describe why certain
decisions were made.
The school premises were not clean. This unsanitary environment
could have spread many diseases which lead to students missing
school and falling behind. This student not attending meant that their
grades were very low. We decide to conduct the project to promote
more tidier which does not poses as a treat like spreading
environmental related diseases , therefor improving the academic
performance of students .

FEASIBILITY STUDY
Labour: The removal of weeds and cleaning of the surroundings uses
unskilled manual labour of which is a keen skill every member of
class 5B has thus it will be feasible to contemplate the project

Resources: The school’s mini truck will be available to items of sale

from the wholesaler to the school premisses during the
implementation of the project and to transport waste baskets from the
producer to the school once enough capital has been raised
AIMS AND OBJECIVES OF THE PROJECT
Aims:
Creating a Clean and Healthy Environment: To actively engage
students in cleaning activities and reduce health causing hazards.
Raising Environmental Awareness: To raise environmental
responsibility amongst students and make the realise the importance
of having a clean and healthy school environment.

Letlotlo Mazongo
Promoting Student Engagement and Ownership: To help students take
active role in caring for their school environment and this will instil
ownership of the cleanliness.

Objectives:
Procuring Essential Infrastructure: to buy trash cans for proper
disposal of waste and contribute to school cleanliness.
Reducing Absenteeism and Improving Academic Performance: to
reduce the number of absent cases caused by issues of an unclean
environment.

ANALYSES
Letlotlo Mazongo won most of the votes for hair man because he is
an orderly student thus, he makes sure the class is always in order.
Atlasaone got the lowers voters because she is very undisciplined.
Junior won the most voters for to be treasure because he is excellent
in accounting thus, he would be able to reconcile our financial books
while Elsie got lest votes because she is not good at accounting and
mathematics hence she got the low votes.
Naomi won the most votes for secretary because she is a neat writer,
and her workspace is always clean thus we would be able to use her
book for reference. Latish got lest votes because she her handwriting
is difficult to read. for the additional member Palesa was elected with
the most votes because she can stand in for any position unlike prince
who is always playful.

PROBLEMS

 Students frequently charged research method grout for example

going for observation to.

Letlotlo Mazongo
 The respondents failed to return the questioner.
 Some of the group member did not do their assigned work.

SOLUTIONS
Voting was carried out regardless of the missing member as more
than 90% of the class was present.
INDIVIDUAL ROLE
I sat for the role of treasurer because I am confident in my accounting
and bookkeeping skills that have been imparted to me through
commerce and accounting lessons. Additionally, I have a passion for
bookkeeping and accounting and my classmates are aware about this,
furthermore I voted during the selection process to further enhance the
notion of democracy in the class and watched as the votes were
counted to ensure transparency.
PROJECT IDENTIFICATION
Brainstorming
Definition: A group discussion to come up with possible ideas or
ways to solve a problem
the class brainstormed on different approaches, and we decided to
settle for an environmental awareness project.
The project was identified using the following methods.
o Interviews-This method involves a researcher asking questions
to participants in a one-on-one or group setting to gather
information. Interviews can be structured (with a predetermined
set of questions) or unstructured (allowing for more open-ended
responses).

o Questionnaire- A questionnaire is a research instrument

consisting of a series of questions and other prompts for the
Letlotlo Mazongo
purpose of gathering information from respondents. It can be
administered in written form or electronically.

o Observation- This method involves systematically watching,

listening to, and recording behaviour and events as they occur in
a natural setting. Observations can be participant (the researcher
is involved in the activities being observed) or non-participant
(the researcher remains separate from the activities).

ANALYSIS
Questionnaire got the highest number as the class some respondents
may fail to return the questionnaire the observation method was
assigned to lesser number because one research method was easy to
carry out as only the 5 human senses are needed to carry it out

Problems

 Some students did not want to do their assigned work instead

wanted to be shifted to other groups e.g., from questionnaire to
observation
Some members didn’t do their assigned work at all.
Additionally, some group members simply did not fulfil their
assigned responsibilities at all. This lack of accountability and follow-
through made it difficult to maintain progress and ensure the
successful completion of the various project components.
Another challenge was the poor response rate from the target
respondents. Many of the questionnaires distributed to gather data and
insights were not returned, despite the students' efforts. This made it

Letlotlo Mazongo
challenging to collect the necessary information to inform the
campaign and draw meaningful conclusions.
Solutions
For those students who failed to fulfil their assigned work, the teacher
implemented a system of punishment. This could have involved
measures such as deducting marks, issuing warnings, or even more
severe consequences, depending on the school's policies. By holding
the students accountable for their actions, the teacher was able to
reinforce the importance of individual contribution and responsibility.
To ensure that all students carried out their assigned work, the teacher
took a firm stance and made it mandatory for each student to complete
their designated tasks. This helped to eliminate the issue of some
students wanting to shift to other groups or neglect their
responsibilities.

Individual role
, I helped draft the questionnaire that was used to gather insights and
feedback from the target audience. This involved carefully designing
the questions, ensuring they were relevant and effective in capturing
the necessary information to inform the environmental awareness
efforts.
Additionally, I was responsible for distributing the questionnaires to
the intended respondents. This required me to take an active
approach, by handing out the forms in person.

Analyses
Environmental management in Saint Joseph’s College was voted for
by the highest number of students thus it was chosen as students
understood the importance of a healthy and clean environment in a
learning facility as most people demised during times of covid 19
because of the unhealthy environment hence the project was the most
Letlotlo Mazongo
feasible.
building more classrooms in Saint Joseph’s College got zero votes
because that would need a large amount of Capital
The class employed a democratic approach to formulate the topics for
the DVS project, leveraging the data collected through the three
research methods (questionnaires, observations, and interviews). The
topics proposed covered a wide range of areas, including assisting a
needy family, raising awareness about teenage issues, environmental
management in the school, installation of air conditioners and heaters,
building more classrooms, and raising awareness on HIV/AIDS.
The topic that received the highest number of votes was
"Environmental management in Saint Joseph's College," accounting
for 32% of the total votes. This indicates that the majority of the
students recognized the importance of maintaining a healthy and clean
environment within the learning facility, especially in the aftermath of
the COVID-19 pandemic, where poor environmental conditions were
attributed to many fatalities.
On the other hand, the topic of "Building more Classrooms in Saint
Joseph's College" received no votes. This suggests that the students
collectively understood the feasibility and financial implications of
such a project, which would require a significant amount of capital
investment.
INDIVIDUAL ROLE
I voted for the topic of teenage pregnancy awareness in Saint Joseph’s
college as I realise that it has become a problem as students are
engaging in risky activities such as early sexual activities.
START-UP CAPITAL
The topic Environmental awareness of which we chose needed funds
to be implemented thus the class agreed on contributing funds as a

Letlotlo Mazongo
form of start-up capital.
We voted for the most moderate amount.

ANALYSES
P200.00 got the least number of votes because it was too high an
amount for most of the students in the classroom. Most students voted
for the P100.00 amount because they felt it was a subsequent amount
despite being high, and a fairly large number of people chose the
P50.00 amount because it was the least amount available, and it
would be easiest to raise.
PROBLEMS
Some students did not want to pay P100.00 but instead felt as though
P50.00 was the most reasonable amount to pay.

Letlotlo Mazongo
SOLUTIONS
They were encouraged to follow the rule of democracy were the
majority amount being P100.00 and hence paid the amount.
INDIVIDUAL ROLE
I voted for my preferred amount which was P200.00 because I felt
that it would raise the most amount of money in order to buy the
waste baskets.

ANALYSES
Boys contributed the least amount because there are only 6 of them in
class as the y are the minority population whereas girls being the
majority population contributed a greater amount.
PROBLEMS

Letlotlo Mazongo
Some of the students refused to contribute the amount because they
thought it was too high and some thought it was too low.
SOLUTIONS
The students that refused to contribute were referred to the teachers
and told to contribute as it was crucial to the project if funds were not
made available.
INDIVIDUAL ROLE
I voted for the amount P100.00 because it would raise a subsequent
amount of capital and catered for both financially stable and unstable
members of the class.
MARKET SURVEY
The school market being the teaching staff, non-teaching staff and the
students were to be examined to find out what they are willing to buy
from our class and for how much they are willing to pay for each
product.

ANALYSES
Pop ice and go-slos were chosen by most of the market in the school
because they were cheap and also because it is hot whereas chips and
biscuits were not chosen by most because they are provided at the
school tuck-shop and also because they were expensive as we had
highlighted the prices on the questionnaires we had used to find out
the information.
PROBLEMS
Some people we interviewed were uncooperative as they were
impolite in answering some of our questions when interviewed.
Some failed to return the questionnaires handed to them.
Some returned the questionnaires unanswered.
SOLUTIONS
We explained to our customers that we were working in our DVS
project and their cooperation was crucial to us and they ended up
understanding and cooperating during interviews.
We used the returned questionnaires to compile the findings.

Letlotlo Mazongo
INDIVIDUAL ROLE
I went out in the field to interview people on the products they
prepare and how much they are willing to pay and then compiled their
response.
CARREER CIVIS DAY
To raise funds for the project we raised funds by having a career
civvies day to raise funds and the 5 different houses were able to raise
the corresponding funds.

because they were very cooperative throughout of the civvies day.
Zebra house contributed the least amount because they have the least
number of students in the school, and unfortunately some of them
were absent for the civvies day.
PROBLMES
Some students were absent on the day of school hence could not
contribute to the cause.
Other students did not support the civvies day initiative because they
do not attend Development studies hence could not understand the
importance of the project.
Solutions
We collected the contributed amount as it was from the houses.
We convinced the houses because it was important to carry out the
project by contributing the required funds.

INDIVIDUAL ROLE
I was allocated into the “weeding” activity because I am good at
manual labour and could accomplish an efficient job in a short
amount of time and helped the others to perform their duties correctly
for improved efficiency.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS WORKSHOP
On the 14th of June, we conducted an environmental awareness

Analyses: Civies day contributed the greatest amount of capital

because there were 5 houses, inclusive of students teaching staff and
non-teaching staff contributing P5.00 each to buy the waste baskets in
the school. The sale of items received the least amount of money
because to time constraints. Students were only given 2 months to sell
the items, and this wasn’t enough to gain a subsequently high amount
of capital. Another problem was that the school also runs a tuckshop
which sells items combating the sale of our items additionally the
hotdog stall by the dining hall takes away most of the customers
hence the community preferred those items over the ones we were
selling.
Problems:
Some students did not submit the funds they made from the selling of
items.
Solutions: Parents were written letters to pay for students who failed
to submit their funds.
Individual Role:
I contributed both the start-up capital and sold stock to raise more
funds and went to buy the stock from the wholesalers all to procure
the waste baskets.

EXIT STRATEGY
After raising enough funds we now prepared to hand over the funds to
the beneficiary. On the 3rd of July 2024, a team left to collect
quotations of waste baskets from different dealerships/ The idea was
to buy from the cheapest dealer with subsequent quality.

HANDING OVER
The handing over ceremony started at 1230 hrs on the 5th of July
2024.
Students started by cleaning the assembly area and arranging chairs.
The masters of ceremony Atlasaone and Naomi urged students to sit
down quietly as the event stated. Atang started the event by giving us
an opening prayer as we are a catholic school.
Prince warmly welcomed everyone to the event and thanked them for
the patience and coordination they demonstrated in ensuring that
students achieved the set goal.
Faith then Highlighted on the objectives of the project which involved
identifying a problem, formulating, raising funds, and buying waste
baskets for the beneficiary.

Letlotlo Mazongo
The project was then handed over to the beneficiary who is saint
joseph’s College.
Mrs Morolong received the project on the behalf of the school. She
thanked us students and encouraged us to continue with our good
gesture, even after leaving saint joseph’s college. She said the project
will go a long way by producing good grades for saint joseph’s
college as the learners in the institution will be learning in a clean and
conducive environment. Teachers and the leaners and the passer byes
into the institution will also be comfortable being in such a clean
environment., Thabisile gave the closing remarks and thanked us
students for the complete project.
The event was closed by a prayer from atang ending at exactly
1530hrs and finally we enjoyed ourselves with snacks and music in
the multipurpose hall, celebrating the completion of the project.
EVALUATION
Upon completion of the project the class evaluated the strengths,
weaknesses, benefits, and conclusion of the projects.
STRENGTHS
The project was completed well on time before the date of submission
for BGCSE
it also created a clean and conducive environment for future
generations in the institution, conducive for teaching and learning. It
was handed over to the beneficiary well on time and lastly the
school’s administration allowed for the implementation of the project.
WEAKNESSSES
Raising of funds was overwhelming as at times It required a lot of
human effort to complete the project well on time.

Letlotlo Mazongo
It was strenuous to sell items to the market as sometimes there would
be very low sales, lastly:
Always giving can create a dependency tendency without the school
doing some things for themselves.

BENEFITS
Acquired entrepreneurial skills through selling of items in the
community which can be used to start a mini business during the
BGCSE vacation.
Promoted the spirit of teamwork as we worked together during the
project, that will be a vital point in future work as now we know the
cruciality of working as a team.
Taught us about hard work and its benefits as we could literally see
the difference in the environment after having cleaned it.
Gave us a crucial literal understanding on research and how to
administer it to the public which is a very vital skill needed in tertiary
level education.
Taught us about competition and why it is important.
Taught students about having a compassionate spirit and why it is
important to always give to the less disadvantaged as now the entire
school has benefitted a clean environment and waste baskets to
dispose of the litter appropriately.
CONCLUSION
The project which took about eight months to complete, was about
environmental awareness it was successfully completed and handed
over to the beneficiary. The project included cleaning the
Letlotlo Mazongo
surrounding, fund raising to buy waste baskets and a workshop about
the environment and why that is important.
RECOMMENDATION
Upon successfully completing the project the class came up with
some recommendations
GOVERNMENT
The government should employ environmental officers in school to
always ensure the surrounding are always kept clean. They should
also introduce environmental awareness as an independent subject to
teach students at an early stage about the importance of the
environmental care.
SCHOOL
The school should ensure the donated waste baskets are taken good
care of and are also put to good use.
The school should promote environmental awareness by introducing
environmental awareness day every term.
STUDENTS
Should take care of the donated waste baskets.
Should ensure the surroundings are always clean as it is conducive for
their learning.
Should encourage each other to ensure the environment is clean.
