Homework 3: Vectors Due Wed. Feb.

14
#1

A plane takes off at a constant velocity of 170 km/hr at an angle of 22° from the horizontal.
After 4 s,

a. how high is the plane off the ground?

b. what horizontal distance has the plane travelled?

#2

The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 6 cm, and one of the shorter sides is 2 cm. Find the third
side, and all three angles, and then (neatly) draw the triangle to scale. Use of a protractor is
recommended.
#3

Consider the vectors = (3,1) and = (1,–2).

a. Find + graphically, and then computationally.

b. Find – graphically, and then computationally.

#4

Below you are given the components of two vectors. For each vector, draw on the diagram, then
find the magnitude and direction (angle).

Ax= 2 m, Ay= –50 cm Bx= 1 m/s, By= 3 m/s

|A|= _________ |B|= ________

 = _________  = ________

#5

An object is launched with an initial velocity of 100 m/s at a launch angle of 35° above the
horizontal.

Make a table of values showing x, y, vx, vy, and speed v every second from t = 0 s
to t = 4 s. Some values have been filled in to get you started.

Time (s) x (m) y (m) vx (m/s) vy (m/s) |v| (m/s)

0 0 0 100
1 52.5 81.9
2 163.8 95.2
3 28.0
4 18.2 83.9

Note: vx2 + vy2 = v2 at all times.

#6

A long jumper maintains a constant horizontal velocity component of 8 m/s; the initial vertical
component is 4 m/s.

a. Using only the y-direction, determine time of flight.

b. What is the horizontal distance jumped?

#7

A ball thrown horizontally at 45 m/s travels a horizontal distance of 300 m before hitting the
ground. From what height was the ball thrown?
#8

A battleship from WWII could hit targets 9 miles away.

a. What launch speed would this require?

b. For how long would such a shell be in the air?

#9

Jimmie aims a dart straight at the center of a dart board. Unfortunately, Jimmie has forgotten
about gravity, so the dart lands 3.75 cm below the bull’s-eye.

a. How long does it take a dart to fall 3.75 cm? [Hint: use y-direction only]

b. Jimmie is standing at regulation distance (2.37 m) from the dartboard. How

fast did he throw the dart?
