The 555 Timer Lab
The 555 timer is an integrated circuit that can be used as an astable or monostable multivibrator and for
many other applications. The 555 can produce an output with a frequency ranging from 0.1 Hz up to 100
kHz. Accuracy is within 1 percent, which is usually far in excess of the accuracy of the external capacitors
and resistors. These external components serve to limit the overall timing accuracy to their tolerances.

Objectives: After completing this experiment, you will be able to:

1. Explain the internal structure of a 555 integrated circuit.
2. Show how the 555 timer can be used as a monostable multivibrator.
3. Show how the 555 timer can be used as an astable multivibrator.
4. Determine the circuit values for a specified output pulse width from a monostable multivibrator.
5. Determine the circuit values for a given frequency and duty cycle from an astable multivibrator.
6. Determine the frequency and duty cycle of a 555 timer configured as an astable multivibrator.
Materials:
1. Power Supply and BNC cable
2. Oscilloscope and two probes
3. 555 Timer IC
4. Component Board, (2) LEDs
5. Resistors 100 k, 4.7 k, 9.1 k, (2) 470 
6. Capacitors 47µF, (2) 0.01 µF

Draw a schematic diagram and indicate the components used for each circuit. Use the applicable formulas
for each circuit to determine the component values. Construct each circuit with the calculated values.
Indicate, with each schematic, the calculated operating parameters and the measured parameters. Draw all
requested waveforms.

Part I The Monostable Multivibrator

The monostable multivibrator is a circuit whose output has one stable state, usually low. When the circuit is
externally triggered, its output goes to the unstable state (which would be high) for a predetermined time,
after which it returns to its stable state. An external RC time constant determines the time for the unstable
state.

A. A. Determine Resistor and Capacitor values that will produce an output pulse width of approximately
five seconds.
B. Connect the 555 timer as a monostable circuit.
1. Connect LED indicators in both the sinking and sourcing mode to the timer output.
2. Connect a short section of wire to the trigger input.
C. You should be able to generate an output pulse each time you touch the trigger wire.
If your circuit fails to trigger, connect a voltage-divider network to the trigger input and use a wire to
momentarily ground the trigger input.

The Values Determined Are: Capacitor ___________ Resistor_________________

Part II The Astable Oscillator
An astable multivibrator has no stable state. Instead, its output voltage alternates between two unstable
states at a constant frequency. The RC network connected to the 555 will determine the frequency and duty
cycle of its output waveform. This circuit is also known as a clock, or free running oscillator.
A. Determine Resistor and Capacitor values to operate an astable multivibrator at approximately 6.2 kHz
with a 60% duty cycle.

The Values Determined Are: Capacitor ______ Resistor 1__________Resistor 2__________

The Calculated Values from the actual resistors Are: Frequency ___________ Duty Cycle_________

B. Connect the 555 timer as an astable oscillator.

C. Use the oscilloscope to observe the output waveform.

1. What is the measured output frequency and duty cycle?

Frequency ___________ Duty Cycle_________

2. Adjust the VCC to 6V, 9V, and 12V. Did changing the VCC affect the oscillator frequency?

D. Calculate new resistor values needed to change the duty cycle to 70% at the same 6.2 kHz output
frequency. Install the new resistors in your circuit and verify the duty cycle change.

The Values Determined Are: Capacitor ______ Resistor 1__________Resistor 2__________

The Calculated Values from the actual resistors Are: Frequency ___________ Duty Cycle_________

The Measured Values etermined Are: Frequency ___________ Duty Cycle_________
