Objective:
To study the application of IC 555 timer connected as astable multivibrator.
Apparatus Required:
Battery 9v DC 1
Theory:
Definition:
An astable multivibrator is a type of electronic circuit that does not have a
stable state. Unlike a monostable multivibrator, which has one stable state
and one triggered unstable state, an astable multivibrator continuously
oscillates between two unstable states without external triggering.
Features:
It is also known as a free-running multivibrator.
It has no stable state, hence the name astable.
It produces a continuous series of pulses with a predetermined frequency
and duty cycle.
It requires two identical transistors two capacitors, and a few resistors.

Application of 555 IC :
The 555 timer IC is a versatile and widely used integrated circuit with numerous
applications. Here are some of its most common applications:
o Flashing lights (LEDs, lamps)
o Pulse generation
o Timers
o Debouncing switches (eliminating switch bounce), etc.
Circuit Diagram:
Operation:
The 555 timer can act like a free-running oscillator (astable multivibrator) using external
resistors (R1, R2) and a capacitor (C1).
● Capacitor charges through R1, raising voltage on a pin (6) that controls the
output.
● When the voltage on pin 6 hits a high threshold (2/3 VCC), the output flips
low.
● The capacitor then discharges through R2, lowering the voltage on pin 6.
● When the voltage on pin 6 dips below a low threshold (1/3 VCC), the output
flips back to high.
This cycle of charging and discharging creates a continuous square wave output at a
frequency set by R1, R2, and C. Higher resistance or lower capacitance leads to a
slower blinking rate.
f osc =1.45/(R1+2R2) *C
Observation:
Total time (t) = 0.693(R1+2R2) *C1
= 0.693*(1000+ 94000)*10*10^-6
= 0.65835 s.
