DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PUBLIC AND

PRIVATE IP ADDRESS

What is IP address?
An IP address is a unique address that identifies a device on the internet or a local
network. IP stands for "Internet Protocol," which is the set of rules governing the format
of data sent via the internet or local network.

What is Public IP Address?

• Public IP address of a system is the IP address which is used to communicate

outside the network. Public IP address is basically assigned by the ISP (Internet
Service Provider).

• IP addresses are expressed as a set of four numbers — an example address might

be 192.158.1.38. Each number in the set can range from 0 to 255. So, the full IP
addressing range goes from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255.

What is Private IP Address?

• A private IP address is the address your network router assigns to your

device. Each device within the same network is assigned a unique private IP
address.

• Private IPs help bolster security within a specific network, like in your home or
office. This is why you can print documents via wireless connection to your
printer at home, but your neighbor can’t send their files to your printer
accidentally.

Key differences between public and private IP
addresses
• The main difference between public and private IP addresses is how far they
reach, and what they’re connected to.

• A public IP address identifies you to the wider internet so that all the
information you’re searching for can find you.

• A private IP address is used within a private network to connect securely to

other devices within that same network.

Each device within the same network has a unique private IP address.
