DIRECT VARIATION Day1
DIRECT VARIATION Day1
Remember:
Quantity y varies directly as quantity x or y is directly proportional to x, if and only if y = kx, where k is
the constant of variation, or constant of proportionality.
If the ratio between two quantities is constant, the two quantities are in direct variation.
In symbols, y = kx, where k is the constant of variation. This means that when x increases, y
increases; or when x decreases, y decreases.
The graph of a direct variation is a straight line with a positive slope or a line that rises from left to
right.
Values Integration:
As we increase our good doings, our chance to achieve success also increases.
Note: Before answering the activity make sure that you have already watched the video on direct variation.
Start answering here:
A. Express each of the following statements as an equation. Use k to represent the constant of variation. First
number is done for you.
7. If y varies directly as x and y = 30, when x = 5, find the constant of variation (k) and equation of variation.
8. The table below shows the number of hours (t) travelled and the distance (d) travelled by a car. Find the
constant od variation and the equation which describes the relation.
Time, t (hr) 1 2 3 4 5
Distance, d (km) 30 60 90 120 150
