COURSE OUTLINE
Day 1 - Wireless Communications Systems Design with MATLAB and USRP Software-Defined Radios
Timing and Frequency Errors and Multipath Channels (2.5 hrs)

Modeling frequency offset, timing jitter errors, and mitigationusing frequency and timing synchronization
techniques. Modeling flat fading,multipath channels, and mitigation using equalizers.

• Modeling phase and timing offsets


• Mitigating frequency offset using a PLL
• Mitigating timing jitter using Gardner timing synchronization
• Modeling flat fading channels
• Using training sequences for channel estimation
• Modeling frequency selective fading channels
• Using Viterbi equalizers for time-invariant channels and LMS linear equalizers for time-varying channels
• Demonstration of a real-time demodulation of single-carrier broadcast using RTL-SDR

End to end system with Simulink (3.0 hrs)


Objective: Add channel impairments and recovery blocks to test receiver performance.
• Adding phase and frequency offset
• Correcting phase and frequency using DQPSK
• Adding timing offset
• Correcting for timing offset
• Modeling multi-path channel impairments
Using MATLAB code in the model for equalization

Building a Radio-in-the-Loop System (2.5 hrs)

Understanding the radio-in-the-loop development workflow. UsingRTL-SDRs and USRPs as radio-in-the-


loop development platforms.

• Overview of the radio-in-the-loop workflow


• MathWorks communications hardware support (RTL-SDR, ADALM-PLUTO, USRP, Zynq®-Based Radio)
• Hardware alternative comparison (pros/cons table)
• Different RIL transmit and receive modes (single burst, looped, streamed)
• Creation of an end-to-end single-antenna multicarrier communications system using a USRP
• Demonstration of a 2x2 OFDM-MIMO over-the-air system using USRPs
Day 2 - 5G Fundamentals with MATLAB
5G NR Waveforms (0.5 hrs)

Learn about the resource grid and frame structure and numerology of 5G waveforms.

• Wireless Waveform Generator App


• 5G waveforms
• 5G frame structure: carriers and bandwidth parts
• 5G numerology: subcarrier spacing

5G NR Data Channels (2 hrs)

Understand basic processing elements for downlink and uplink transport and physical data channels. Learn
about allocation, mapping types, and transform precoding.

• DL-SCH and PDSCH processing chains


• PDSCH allocation and mapping types
• UL-SCH and PUSCH processing chains
• Transform precoding and PUSCH mapping types

5G NR Control Channels (2 hrs)

Understand the structure and characteristics of downlink and uplink control channels, including DCI and
UCI formats, PDCCH and PUCCH processing chains, CORESETs, search spaces, and scheduling requests.

• DCI formats and PDCCH processing chain


• Resource element groups and control channel elements
• CORESET structure and characteristics
• PDCCH mapping to CORESETs and search spaces
• UCI formats and PUCCH processing chain
• UCI usage and scheduling requests

5G NR Waveform Generation and System Simulation Using 5G Toolbox (2.5 hrs)

Learn best practices and workflows for using 5G Toolbox. Understand how to generate 5G waveforms, set
up spatial channel models, and send a signal through the channel. Explore receiver implementation issues
and end-to-end performance metrics. Receive an introduction to various application-specific workflows.

• Overview of 5G Toolbox
• Interactive and programmatic 5G waveform generation
• Configuration of cluster delay line and tapped delay line wireless channel models
• Signal transmission through a noisy channel
• Receiver implementation, including synchronization and channel estimation
