PHYSICS
PAPER 3 (PRACTICAL)
JULY/AUGUST, 2009
TIME: 2 ½ HRS

FORM FOUR END OF TERM II EXAMINATIONS -

2009

This questions has two part A and B. answer both parts

SECTION A
You are provided with the following
- Metre ruler
- Knife edge
- 10 microscope slides
- A 50 g mass
- A piece of cellotape
- A pair of vernier calipers

Proceed as follows
(a) Using the vernier caliper provided, measure the length l and the width 2 of
the
Microsoft

I ______________________________________________ (1mark)
W ______________________________________________ (1 mark)

(b) Stack 10 slides together using a cellotape

(i) Measure the thickness T of the stack of microscopes slides
T = __________________________________________ (1 mark)

(ii) Determine the volume V of the stack of Microsoft slides given V =

1wt
V= ___________________________________________

(2 marks)

(c) Balance the meter at its centre rule at its centre of gravity (C.G) and
maintain the position of fulcrum on the e.g. throughout the
experience.

Place the 50 g mass and the stack of slides as shown below;

Adjust the position of both the stack and the mass until the rule is gain
balanced.

NB: make the distances x and y as large as possible

(i) calculate the mass m (in grams) of the stack of slides. (2 marks)

X = __________________cm y = ____________________ cm
M = ______________________________________________________
__________________________________________________ grams
(ii) Determine the density of glass (2 marks)
PART B

You are provided with the following;

o a rectangular glass block
o four optical pins
o a piece of soft board
o a plain sheet of paper
o cello - tape
o
You are also required to have your complete mathematical set
Proceed as follows: -

(d)Place the plain sheep on the soft board and fixed it using the cello - tape
provided. Place the glass block at the centre of the sheet, and draw its
outline. Revolve the glass block

(see figure 2)

Figure 2

(e) Draw a normal at a point 2cm from the end of one of the longer side of the
block outline
This normal line will used for the rest of this experiment
Draw a line at an angle 0=250 from the normal. Stick two pin P1 and P2
vertically on this line.

(f) By viewing though the glass from the opposite side stick two other pins P 3
and P4 vertically such that they are in line with the images of the first two
pins. Draw a line though the marks made by P 3 and P4 to touch the outline.
Extend the line P1 P2 though the outline (dotted line)
Measure and record in table 2 the perpendicular distance d and between
the extended line and the line P3 and P4 (see figure 2)

Record this value in table 1.

(g)Repeat the procedure in (e) and (f) for other values of 0 shown in table 1

NB: this sheet of paper with the drawing must be handed in together with this
question paper. Ensure you write your name and index number on this sheet
paper.

(h) (i) On the grid provided, plot a graph and d(y-axis) against 0 (5 marks)

GRAPH

(ii) Using the graph, estimate the value of d when 0= 0 0 (2 marks)

2.0 You are produced with the following

- Two wires, one labeled T and the other S each mounted on a piece of wood.
- A dry cell and a cell holder
- A wire W mounted on a mm scale
- A jockey
- A centre zero galvanometer
- Connecting wires (some with crocodile clips)
- A micrometer screw gauge ( to be shared)
- A metre rule or a half merewe ruler
- A switch

Proceeds as follows:
(a) Determine the average diameter D, of the wire labeled T and the average
diameter, d of the wire labeled S using the micrometer screw gauge
provide.
D = _________________________________________ mm (1 mark)
D = __________________________________________ mm (1 mark)

Calculate D
d

D _______________________ (1 mark)
d
(b)Set up the apparatus as shown in the circuit diagram in figure 3. Use
crocodile clips to fix the lengths of T and S at 50 cm each initially.

This length of T will not be changed thought the experiment

Figure 3.

(c) Close the switch. Use the jockey to touch one end of the wire W and then
other end. The deflections on the galvanometer should be in the opposite
direction if not, check the circuit adjust the position of the jockey along the
wire W until there is no deflection in the galvanometer. This is the balance
point. Record the values of X in cm in the table

(b)Adjust the length of wire S to 45 cm. find the balance point and record the
value of X in the table. Repeat for the other vales of l in the table. Complete
the table
