variable.
When listing the domain and range, you must order the numbers in
ascending order (least to greatest) and do not repeat values.
Examples
{(1,2), (2,4), (3,8)} - Domain: {1, 2, 3} Range:
{2, 4, 8}
{(1,3), (2,4), (3,3)} - Domain: {1, 2, 3} Range:
{3, 4}

2 0

Domain: {2, 4, 8, 9} Range: {1, 2, 4,

11}

Domain: {-4, -2, 0, 2, 3, 4}

Range: {-3, -2, 0, 1, 3}
Sometimes it isn’t possible to list all the values that x or y can be because
the graph is continues (infinite) and made up of an infinite number of
points, like a LINE, a RAY, or even a SEGMENT.
In a continuous graph to determine the domain, you should focus on
looking
-x to +x on the graph.
In a continuous graph to determine the range, you should focus on
3

looking
-y to +y on the graph.
Use ________________ ___________________ to describe the domain and range
for the graphs to represent continuous graphs.

SOL A.7a, f Functions

A Function_ is a relation in which each element of the domain is paired
with EXACTLY one element of the range.
To be a function, the values in the domain cannot repeat.
Determine whether each relation is a function. State the domain
and range.
Example # 1
{(2,3), (3,0), (5,2), (4,3)}
Function: Yes No
Domain: {2, 3, 5, 4} Range:

You can use the VERTICAL line test to determine if a graph represents a
function. If the vertical line(s) intersect the graph at only one point it is a
function.
If the line(s) intersect at more than one point it is NOT a function.

SOL A.7c, d Zeros or Roots of a Function

The ___________________ of a function are the x-coordinates of all points
where the graph of a function crosses the x-axis.
Zeros of a function can also be called the “___________” of a function.
What are the zeros or roots of the functions graphed?
9

To find zeros of a function that is not graphed (from an equation):

1. Set the function equal to zero.
2. Solve for x.
3. Write the solution as an ordered pair.
Example # 1 What are the zeros of f ( x )=6 x +3 ?

0 = 6x + 3 ZEROs: (-½ , 0)
-3 -3
-3 = 6x
-½ = x
Example # 2 What are the zeros of f ( x )= ( x −2 )( x +3 ) ?

0 = (x-2)(x+3)
0=x-2 I 0 = x+3 ZEROs: (2, 0)
+2 +2 -3 -3 (-3, 0)
2=x -3 = x

SOL A.7c X and Y Intercepts

A _______ - _____________ of a function is where the function crosses the x-
axis. It is also called the ____________ of the function.
A function can have _________ or more x-intercepts or zeros.
10

A _____ - _______________ of a function is the point where the function

crosses or intersects the y-axis.
A function will always have at most _____ y-intercept.
Finding the intercepts from a graph.
Example # 1
Example # 2

Finding the intercepts from an equation.

To find the x-intercept, set y = 0 and solve for x.
To find the y-intercept, set x = 0 and solve for y.
Keep in mind, f(x) is the same as y.
Examples
−3 x−9 y=−18 y=−2 x +6 f ( x )=2 x +5
11

Finding the intercepts from a table.

To find the x-intercept, the RANGE has to be 0. (domain, 0)
To find the y-intercept, the DOMAIN has to be 0. (0, range)
Examples

Find and graph the intercepts of the function.

Let’s Try A Few On Your Own…

Find the x and y intercepts for each.
12

4 x+ y=5

1. 2.

y=−3 x +6

3. 4. Graph in DESMOS:

5. A student says that the x-intercept of the graph x +2 y=5 is the point
(0,5). Why is the student incorrect?
6. How many zeros does the function have?
What are the real roots or zeros of the function?
What is the y-intercept of the function?
13

SOL A.7f Function Notation & Evaluating A

Function
An expression such as f(x) or g(x) is used to name a function that
represents the set of output values for the set of input values represented
by x. This is called ________________ ___________________.
f(x) = “f is a function of x”
Since y depends on x, you can replace f(x) with y.
A ____________ ______________ is an equation that describes a function. A
function rule is an INPUT --- OUTPUT machine.
Example # 1: Given f ( x )=3 x−2 find f (3) and f (-2).

Example # 2: Given g ( x )=x 2−4 x+ 9 find g (-3) and g (4).

Example # 3: Find the range for the function, f ( x )=−3 x +5 given the domain
{-3,1,0,4}
14

Writing Function Rules

You can write a rule for a function by analyzing its values. When analyzing,
look for a pattern relating the independent variable, ______ to the
dependent variable, _______.

Write the function rule.

Remember “f(x)” is a equivalent to “y”.

Example: Suppose you buy a word processing software package for $100.
You charge $15 per hour to teach a course on word processing. Write a
rule that would describe your profit as a function of the number of hours
15

you work. Let P(n) = your profit; and let n=number of hours worked.

SOL A.7a, b, f Multiple Representations

Relationships and functions can be represented as graphs, ______________,
_______________, or verbal descriptions. Each representation gives us
certain information. A table of values, mapping diagram, or set of ordered
pairs gives us a list of input values and their corresponding output values.
